How Do I Renew an Item?
Renewals may be done either in person at a circulation desk, over the telephone (617-730-2370, Information Desk), or online from the "My Account" feature of our Web Catalog. Please have your library card number handy when renewing. You may renew most* items twice.
Renewing Online
- Go to the My Account feature in our Web Catalog.
- Enter your barcode number without spaces and your PIN. (If you don't yet have a PIN, you can assign yourself one.
- Click the SUBMIT button.
- Click the link on the right for [#] Items currently checked out
- Check the boxes next to the item(s) you want to renew and click the button "Renew Selected Items", or just click "Renew All Items" to renew everything.
- In the Status column, you should now see the message "RENEWED Now due [new due date]" in black next to the item if the renewal was successful. If the renewal was not successful, you will see a message such as "HOLD" or "RENEW NOT ALLOWED" next to the due date. Listed below are some reasons you may not be able to renew an item.
- Please note that normal overdue fines will be assessed for each item that was overdue at the time of renewal. No alert is displayed about a fine, but you will have a link saying $1.00 in unpaid fines and bills now listed at the top of the page. Clicking that link will give you the details of your fines.If you have over $3.00 in fines, you will not be able to renew anything else.
*Reasons you may be unable to renew an item:
- You may have already renewed it as many times as allowed for that type of material - generally twice, but zero for magazines, videos (non-ESL), special charges, and summer loans.
- Someone else has requested (put a hold on) it.
- Your account has fines of more than $3.00
- You have more than ten overdue items.
- You have one or more Assumed Lost items.
