Teen Adventure Challenge: Falconry!

image

SATURDAY OCTOBER 15
10:30 am – 12 noon in HUNNEMAN HALL
OPEN TO TWEENS & TEENS AGES 10-18
Breakfast will be served at 10am!  SIGN UP @ the Reference Desk Main Branch OR at the Facebook event!

Falconry, once known as the sport of kings, is the use of trained birds, usually hawks or falcons, in hunting.  Featured in a wide variety of fantasy adventures, part of being a hero or heroine often means discovering an ally in an animal, from a clever horse to a lightning-quick raptor.

But what is falconry really like? What kinds of birds are raptors, and why are they so suited to the conditioned response, instinct, and imprinting required in falconry? Join trainers from the New Hampshire School of Falconry to discover the history, technique, and training in this sport.  Best of all, everyone will be able to see live falcons and hawks with a lucky few getting a chance to directly interact with these striking animals.

Remember, the deal for the raffle is:

Ms. Desai will tell us all about the history of henna tattoos. She can unfortunately only do twelve designs, so if you would like to be one of the teens to get a henna tattoo, please let me know ASAP sending along your name and grade (email me at teenlibrarian (at) brooklinelibrary.org). I’ll sign you up for a spot.  First come, first serve.

I’ve also got one Mockingjay collection prize (A stamped copy of Mockingjay, a special Hunger Games bag clip, and a Catching Fire mockingjay pin!) and a signed copy of Raina Telgemeier’s Smile: A Dental Drama. As with years past, we’ll also have an assortment of gift certificates and smaller prizes to win. As we’ll be outside, we’re doing the raffle the old-fashioned way (with paper tickets).

This event is open only to those teens who participated in our summer reading program I hope to see everyone who joined us this summer there!
