Submission Deadline EXTENDED to Friday, October 9, 2009

Do you love to draw, paint, or sculpt? Do you imagine stories a little bit off from reality -- a little bit more fantastical, or magical, or simply different?

We want you for our Beyond Reality Art Show!

During the month of October, the Brookline Public Library will be displaying teen-created artwork inspired by the theme "beyond reality" in Hunneman Hall and in the Teen Room to highlight the fantastic art of our local teen artists.

Please hand in all artwork at the Information Desk at the Main Library for Robin Brenner.

The final selections for the Beyond Reality Art Show will be selected by the members of the Library Guild, our teen run community service club, consulting with the Teen Librarian.

Submission Guidelines for artists:

  • 1. You must be in the 6th through 12th grade and live or go to school in Brookline.
  • 2. The deadline for turning in art for display is September 29. Please make sure to submit your art in time!
  • 3. You may submit up to five pieces of artwork for consideration. Make sure to sign your art and hand in our art identification forms (available for download above or in print in the Teen Room) so we can make sure one, everyone’s art is displayed correctly, and two, that everyone will get their own artwork back!
  • 4. Every artist is guaranteed to have at least one piece in the show provided it meets these guidelines.
  • 5. Your artwork must be on paper (even if it started as digital artwork), but any kind of medium will be accepted. If you have art that works best in 3D (sculptures, etc.) we will have cases for display.
  • 6. Your artwork must be appropriate for all audiences – i.e. “rated” PG-13 or lower.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Anime and Manga Club

Who can submit art?
Any teen, i.e. any student in 6th to 8th grade, and who lives or goes to school in Brookline may submit their art for the art show.

How many pieces can I submit?
You may submit up to five pieces to be considered for display in the show. Every artist is guaranteed one piece in the show, with a possibility for more depending on the number of submissions and space.

Does the art have to be directly related to the beyond reality theme?
While we are looking for artists working to stretch their ideas of reality, how you do that is up to you. The more creative, the better! We want to include as many pieces as possible, so we will be fairly flexible about what will be considered.

When do I have to bring in my submissions?
All submissions must be handed in to the Main Library by Tuesday September 29th. We must have submissions by then in order to judge everyone's work and in order to hang up the show in time for its debut on October 1st.

Can I submit digital or online art?
Sure -- as long as you can print it out in a form we can display. Everyone creates in different ways, so art created online or on a computer is definitely ok, but we have to be able to display it in our gallery space. 3D art is also possible, given that we will also have a display case.

I don't create art in this theme. Will there be another art show for me?
This is the second of our teen shows focusing on teen artwork. If you'd like to be involved in future art shows, please let us know! Email Robin Brenner, the Teen Librarian, at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to let her know you want to be part of an upcoming art show!

Why is this art show themed on bending reality?
As our show is going to be at the same time as Teen Read Week, which is happening from October 18 -24, we thought we'd borrow the Teen Read Week theme. What with all the popularity of vampires, zombies, fairies, and other stretches of our own world, why not see what our artists decide to create from those tales, and beyond?
