Come to the Photo Scavenger Hunt Friday July 25th and see who finds the most items! This time there'll be no photos from books or Internet searches, though, so it'll require all your creativity.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2008 Summer Reading Program

How do I sign up for the reading program?
To sign up for Game On, you can sign up through our online form here. You can also come into the library to sign up on paper -- we have sign up forms at the Information Desk at the Main Library.
You'll need to create a username and password when signing up, so be sure to remember what you've chosen for both! Your username and password are what will let you sign in and log your hours and write reviews as you go through the summer.

How do I keep track of my hours of reading?
To log your hours after June 20th, you will need to log in. Once you've entered your username and password (the ones you created when you signed up for the program), you should click on the "Add/View Log" button. In the log, you can type in the number of hours you've read. If you'd like to write a review, just click on the link right below the hour log, which reads "Click here to enter your review."

How do I write reviews?
To write a review after June 20th, you will need to log in. Once you've entered your username and password (the ones you created when you signed up for the program), you should click on the "Add/View Log" button. To write a review, just click on the link right below the hour log, which reads "Click here to enter your review." Make sure to provide the title, the author, and let us know whether you'd like it up on the website for other teens to read. Remember, every 100-word review gets you two more raffle tickets for the prizes at the end of the summer.

When do I start logging my time spent reading?
You may start logging hours on June 20th.

Does reading I did before June 20th count?
Unfortunately, no -- we want to give everyone a fair starting point, so readers start out at the same level and have the same ways to get tickets. Anything you read after June 20th counts, though, even if you sign up later.

Do I have to sign up for both the reading program and the gaming tournament?
If you want to attend the gaming tournaments, then you must sign up for them here. However, you don't have to sign up for both programs -- you can do only the reading program, or only the tournaments, or you can do both (I promise that's more fun!)

Do I get tickets for going to the Photo Scavenger Hunt or the Breaking Dawn Release Party? What does that get me?
Even if all you do is attend the Photo Scavenger Hunt, or the Breaking Dawn Release Party, every event you attend gets you 5 tickets for the final prize raffle. Of course, the more you do (reading, writing reviews, attending other events) the more chances you get, but you don't have to do more than show up!

Are there separate prizes for gaming and reading?
Each gaming tournament will have their own prizes for the champions (gift cards to GameStop.) The other prizes listed, from the Nintendo DS Lite to gift cards, will part of our prize finale, but are not the prizes for the gaming tournament itself. These prizes are for the entire summer reading program, so you can gain chances to win them by reading, writing reviews, and attending events over the summer. You don't have to participate in the gaming tournaments to get a chance to win these prizes.

When do we get the prizes?
Everyone who signs up for the Summer Reading Program will be automatically entered in the weekly prize drawings. The big prizes, like the Nintendo DS Lite and the iPod shuffles, will be auctioned off at our final event, after the second gaming tournament and at the prize finale on August 29th. Remember, every hour you read, review you write, or event you attend gets you more chances to bid on the prizes at the finale!

How do I win a copy of Breaking Dawn?
We will have one copy of Breaking Dawn that you may win by attending the Breaking Dawn Release Party on August 2nd. We will also have one copy as a prize at the end of the summer, in the prize raffle. So there are two chances total to win your very own copy of the book.

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2008 Gaming Tournaments

How many teens can participate in the tournament?
Right now we are limiting the tournaments to 24 teens, on a first-come, first-serve basis in terms of sign up. So sign up soon! This is due to limits on space and on the time we'll have -- we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to play! We will have other games and activities around while you're waiting for your turn.

What are the rules for participating in the tournament?

Do I have to get my parent or guardian's permission for the tournament?
Yes you do! Please make sure your parent or guardian reads the Tournament rules for signing up so we know you have their permission to participate.

What are the rules for participating in the tournament?
At the gaming tournaments, participants will have an opportunity to play Dance Dance Revolution, Rock Band and/or Mario Kart. Participants will be under the supervision of a Library staff member at all times. To maximize participation, only 24 slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants must behave in a manner respectful of the other participants, their personal property, and library property. All Library rules of conduct apply. Participants who do not follow directions or who behave inappropriately will be asked to leave.
1. DDR is a safe and fun dancing video game that gets the heart rate up to 140 beats per minute! However, participants play this game at their own risk. The Library and presenter cannot be responsible for participants’ health or fitness.
2. ALL participants must have a signed permission slip/photo release form on file with the library. No visitors are allowed, even if they are not playing. Once you enter the program, you may not leave and return.
3. ALL participants must be entering grades 7 through 12. NO exceptions.

How many chances do I get for bidding on prizes from going to the gaming tournaments?
If you only come to the two gaming tournaments, and do nothing else, then you will get ten tickets to use for bidding on the big prizes.
If you participate in the Summer Reading Program, you can increase the number of chances you'll get with every hour you read, every review you write, and every other event you attend. So, basically, the more you do, the more chances you'll get to bid on the prizes at the end of the summer!

Can I bring my own controller to the tournaments?
Yes, you can. Please be careful though -- keep your controller with you at all times, as given the number of people who are attending as well as the variety of controllers out there, it will be far too easy for someone to walk of with your controller.

Will there be more gaming events and tournaments in the future?
If we get a lot of gaming tournament participants, we'll know that teens want gaming! Not that this is such a shock, but showing up to the gaming tournament is a pretty good way to show if you'd like more. If you want more gaming nights, let Robin (the Teen Librarian) know at the event, or just let a librarian know at the Reference or Information Desk. You can always email Robin at , too, and let her know what you'd like to play, how often, and when (day of the week, time of day) you'd like to have more gaming events!
