Local Author Talk: Mai Kim Le

MONDAY, May 9 at 7 PM

Brookline author Mai Kim Le discusses her debut memoir Worlds Apart: My Personal Life Journey through Transcultural Poverty, Privilege & Passion, in conversation with Library Trustee Chris Chanyasulkit. Mai will speak about the process of writing her memoir, how she came to writing, and the importance of creativity and self-expression.

Copies of Worlds Apart will be available for purchase courtesy of Brookline Booksmith, and a book signing will follow the talk. You can read more about Mai Kim Le and Chris Chanyasulkit's work on our website.

This will be a hybrid event, so you can attend in person at the Brookline Village Library or online via Zoom. No registration required for the in-person program. To register for the Zoom webinar, click here.

The Brookline Interactive Group will also be broadcasting this event. You can watch BIG’s broadcast online here, or watch on TV by tuning in to their Community Channel – Brookline RCN and Comcast Cable Channel 3.

ideaSPACE Make & Meet: Sublimation Printing

Want to make something awesome and meet the Library’s ideaSPACE tools up close? Then ideaSPACE Make & Meet is for you! These drop-in, hands-on activities are designed to give you a chance to ask questions and get creative with some of our favorite machines in the collection.

This month, we’ll be creating sublimation-printed zipper pouches using our Cricut cutters and Cricut infusible ink. Swing by anytime between 7 and 8 PM to join in! This project is both kiddo- and grown-up-friendly, so the whole family is welcome to participate.

US Open Ticket Auction

Calling all golf lovers: Here’s your chance to attend the US Open Golf Championship and support the Brookline Library Foundation simultaneously!

From June 13 through June 19, the U.S. Open Golf Championship is coming back to The Country Club in Brookline for the first time since 1988. The Country Club has generously donated two pairs of passes that the Brookline Library Foundation is auctioning off – one pair of tickets for a practice round and one pair for day two of the tournament.

The ticket auction runs through 8 PM on Sunday, May 8. Learn more and bid on the Gallery passes to attend the US Open Golf Championship in person!

WEDNESDAY, May 4 from 2-4 PM

Celebrate May the 4th with us at the Brookline Village Library! Do a craft, make your way through a scavenger hunt, enter to win a raffle prize, and take an out of this world photo at our green screen photo booth! Costumes are welcome and encouraged. For families and kids of all ages.

Art Across Asia: Masterpieces of the Asian Art Museum

What constitutes a “masterpiece?” Why are some objects considered masterworks while others are relegated to lesser positions? Join Linda Shen Lei to explore some answers as illustrated by a few of the very best treasures of San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum. These are masterworks from the vast and varied regions we collectively call Asia, which stretches from the Mediterranean to the Pacific. Fabulous statues, ancient bronzes, mystic jade, delicate ceramics, and evocative paintings – let them engulf you in their amazing beauty and workmanship.

Teen Snack Taste Test Bracket

MONDAY afternoons

Count down to summer with a weekly snack taste test in the Brookline Village Library Teen Room. Starting in May, drop in every Monday afternoon to try this week’s taste test and vote on your favorites. We will proclaim one snack the best during the last week of school! Categories include salty, cookie, gummy, and chocolate, and every week will include new or rare flavors.

Open to teens in grades 8-12, with a limit of one taste test snack pack per teen per week (while supplies last!). This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brookline Public Library.

Mandala Making at Winthrop Park

TUESDAY, May 10 at 3 PM

Join us at Winthrop Park (just around the corner from the Coolidge Corner Library) to help us celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! We’ll be making mandalas to decorate your garden, use as a paperweight, or keep as a favorite treasure. There will be some rocks available to decorate, but you are welcome to bring your own.

This is a drop-in program, so you can stop by any time during the 3 – 4 PM window. It will be happening outdoors at Winthrop Park, along the Browne Street entrance. If the weather is not suitable for an outdoor program, we will relocate to the Coolidge Corner Meeting Room. Any changes will be announced on the Library calendar and social media. This event is generously sponsored by the Brookline Library Foundation.

Program Recording: Shared Habitat Earth

Couldn't make our Shared Habitat Earth panel? Not to worry, it's now available to watch online. This panel was convened in honor of Earth Day and in conjunction with the group exhibit Shared Habitat Earth (SHE), on view at the Coolidge Corner Library through June 30. Speakers on the panel were artists and activists from SHE, Mothers Out Front Brookline, and Surfrider Foundation Massachusetts.
