Draw what you see and see what you draw! In this introductory-level workshop, students will learn the essentials of drawing technique – specifically drawing from observation and reality. Using graphite to its fullest extent, students will learn simple, effective strategies for observing and drawing that can be carried into any kind of visual art.
This workshop is open to all adults. No registration necessary; as supplies last.
This program is in collaboration with the Brookline Arts Center. The BAC serves over 5,000 individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities each year through classes and workshops, community outreach programs, exhibitions, public art activities, and special events. Join us for a dynamic night of Afro-Cuban poetry and music! Northeastern University professor and scholar of Latin American Studies Alan West-Durán will guide us on a journey through the poetry of Nicolás Guillén (1902-1989). Guillén was a leader in the Afrocubanismo arts movement that had ties both to the Harlem Renaissance and the Negritude Movement of the French-speaking Caribbean.
Guillén’s poetry captures the daily life of Afro-Cubans and the history of Cuba. Many of his works have also been set to music. Alan will share five of Guillén’s poems and their musical renditions. Musical genres will include Cuban son, folk, nueva trova, classical, salsa, and rap. If you are interested in learning more about Afro-Cuban arts and culture, this session is for you!

Would you like to learn about ways to support local pollinators like bees, birds, and butterflies? Meet the Brookline Pollinator Pathway, a collaboration between Mothers Out Front, the Brookline Garden Club, Brookline teachers, and community members that is working to provide habitat for pollinator species around town. This past spring, the Brookline Pollinator Pathway installed a pollinator garden at the Brookline Village Library, full of native plants.
At this program, members of the Brookline Pollinator Pathway will speak about their work, the importance of native plants, and how we can help pollinators. Then everyone will have a chance to get planting with a hands-on activity to grow native plants. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or want to learn, whether you’re gardening in your yard or in your apartment, or whether you just want to learn more about pollinators and native plants—you’ll come out of this workshop with knowledge that you can put into action.
You can read more about the work of the Brookline Pollinator Pathway here.
