Mexico: A Cultural Journey through Aztec Dance

Putterham Library

SATURDAY, September 30 at 2 PM

Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with music and movement! Join guest artist Rosalba Solis, founder of La Piñata, for an interactive workshop on Aztec dance. Traditional Aztec dance has been kept alive and passed down from generation to generation. Rosalba will share how dance and music are used to transmit stories and history. Participants will engage in a fun cultural celebration through music, movement, games, and stories!

All ages are welcome to attend. No registration required. Open to the first 30 participants.

Brookline Porchfest 2023

SATURDAY, September 30 from 4-6 PM

The Library is delighted to be part of Brookline Porchfest 2023! This town-wide event features local bands performing throughout the day at locations all across Brookline. The Brookline Village Library will be hosting two bands on the lawn by the Children’s Garden, on the School Street side of the building:

4 PM: Polar Vortex
5 PM: Saxyderms

Adults and kids of all ages are invited to join us for an afternoon of music! For a full event schedule and map, please visit the Brookline Porchfest website.

Please note that the Library building will close at its usual Saturday time of 5 PM, and the outdoor performances will continue until 6 PM, after the building itself has closed.

FOR ADULTS

Lotus Lantern Workshop

Brookline Village Library

WEDNESDAY, September 27 at 7 PM

Join us as we make our own Lotus Lanterns, led by the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project. The lotus grows in a swamp or pond, but is not tainted by the mud and has a clear and subtle fragrance. This natural characteristic has been used as a symbol of purity, nobility, and sublimity. With those characteristics, who wouldn’t want to make one?

This program is limited to 50 adult attendees. Tickets will be available at the Reference Desk a half hour before the program begins. This event is generously sponsored by the Brookline Library Foundation.

Draw Like a Pro with the Brookline Arts Center

Brookline Village Library

SATURDAY, October 7 at 2 PM

Draw what you see and see what you draw! In this introductory-level workshop, students will learn the essentials of drawing technique – specifically drawing from observation and reality. Using graphite to its fullest extent, students will learn simple, effective strategies for observing and drawing that can be carried into any kind of visual art. This workshop is open to all adults. No registration necessary; as supplies last.

Poetry Writers Meetup - Tuesday, September 26 at 7 PM - Join us for a get-together with poets from Brookline and Greater Boston, hosted by Brookline’s current poet laureate, Jennifer Barber!

Coming Soon: Graphic Novel Group! Come join us and read the latest and greatest in graphic novels. The group will meet the fourth Thursday of the month, beginning October 26 at 7 PM at Brookline Village. Copies of the upcoming meeting’s selection will be held behind the circulation desk at the Brookline Village Library.

Write to a Banned Book Author

Celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week! Write a letter of support to an author of banned or challenged books. Addresses and letter-writing supplies will be provided. For tweens and teens in grades 5-12 only. No registration required.

Safe Routes to School – Bicycle Safety Training

WEDNESDAY, September 27 at 3:30 PM

Come learn how to be safe on your bike! The Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program works to increase safe biking and walking among elementary, middle, and high school students by using a collaborative, community-focused approach that bridges the gap between health and transportation.

During the program you will learn how to check that your helmet has the proper fit – so please bring your helmet if you have one. For ages 7-12

The Floor is Lava

Brookline Village Library

WEDNESDAY, September 27 at 6 PM

Oh no! The floor is Lava! Test your dexterity and creativity as you make your way across the Brookline Village Library Children’s Garden, without ever touching the ground. Drop by anytime between 6 and 7 PM to jump, skip, and hop your way across the lava.

This program is for kid of all ages and their families. If there is inclement weather, the program may be moved indoors or cancelled. In the event of a cancellation or location change, the Library's calendar and social media will be updated.
