BHS RISING SENIOR TAL BERREBY WINS 2024 PEARLMAN CREATIVE WRITING AWARD

This year’s annual Edith Pearlman Creative Writing Award was presented to rising senior Tal Berreby at the Brookline High School awards ceremony on Wednesday, April 24. The award was established in 2016 by the Trustees of the Brookline Library. It honors the late, greatly admired Brookline resident, Edith Pearlman, who has been described in the New York Times Book Review as “one of the most essential short story visionaries of our time.”

The award, given in conjunction with the Brookline High School English department, honors a student who has demonstrated exceptional passion and skill in the area of creative writing. Of this year’s winner, school counselor Dan Berman says “Tal is one of the best creative writers that I’ve taught at BHS – an amazing poet, ambitious and driven, willing to write about deep and personal topics in thoughtful ways.” English teacher Evan Mousseau concurs, noting as well that Tal exhibits “all the crafting and revision moves of a strong writer.”

Tal is a member of the Poetry Club, a participant in the High School’s Story Hour, and has been a Whipple Fellow, the High School’s paid summer writing residency, for several years.

Edith Pearlman is celebrated for her non-fiction and travel writing and especially for her short stories. Her essays have appeared in The Atlantic, Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and many other publications.

Among her acclaimed books of short stories is the anthology, Binocular Vision, which was nominated for the National Book Award for fiction in 2011 and in 2012 won the National Book Critics Circle award. Her 2015 collection of stories, Honeydew, has been praised by novelist Ann Patchett, New Yorker literary critic James Wood, and many others. Pearlman’s skillfully crafted, compassionate work should inspire young writers like Tal Berreby and future winners of the Edith Pearlman Book Award.

5 Brookline StoryWalks

Get moving and reading this May! We’ve partnered with the Department of Public Works Parks and Open Spaces Division with additional support from the Brookline Library Foundation to bring a StoryWalk® to five parks across Brookline.

Our StoryWalks® can be found at the Brookline Ave Playground, Dane Park, Fisher Hill Reservoir Park, Griggs Park, and Halls Pond* all month! You can also catch a pop-up StoryWalk® at Clark Park Community Day on May 11.

The StoryWalk® is on yard signs around perimeters or walking paths of parks – read along as you walk from sign to sign! You can always answer questions and complete activities that go along with the book on each sign to bring the story to life.

Click here for a map of all StoryWalk® locations!

*The StoryWalk® at Halls Pond will be installed on May 6, following the Halls Pond Community Day.

Dr. Rosie Helps the Animals

Putterham

Saturday, May 11 at 10:30 AM

Meet the author and illustrator of Dr. Rosie Helps the Animals, an award-winning STEM picture book based on and informed by real-world veterinarians. Jennifer, the author, and Rozillia, the illustrator, will first tell the story behind the story of Dr. Rosie and then engage kids in an interactive reading.

Following the reading will be a hands-on activity where kids (and their grownups) diagnose and treat a stuffy. Each participant will receive a mini vet kit and diagnostic/treatment sheet to take home. Alternatively, Jennifer and Rozillia can lead kids through hands-on experiments related to the book.

What Else?

Kids should bring their own stuffy. Mini stuffed animals will be provided for any kid who needs one. There will be a limit of 30 kits. More than 30 kids can attend, but kits are limited. This program is ideal for young people ages 4-8. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase. Proceeds are directed to a veterinary scholarship fund.

Attendance is limited to 30; admission will be on a first come/first served basis.
We offer this program in honor of National Pet Month, May 2024.
