As part of Summer Reading , the library offers this all-ages program!
What do Yebba, JRR Tolkein, and Jazz have in common? Come find out as the Greg Loughman trio leads you on a jazz-infused exploration of epic fantasy novels. With this concert, we will highlight a diverse group of epic fantasy fiction writers and describe the works they have written while performing music related to their stories. If you enjoy jazz, you’ll love how Greg Loughman’s trio uses epic fantasy authors and works as inspiration for their jazz compositions and performance. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy, you can celebrate your favorite authors and books and discover new works while being entertained by world-class jazz. Authors celebrated will be Tolkien (LOtR), Tomi Adeyemi (Legends of the Orisha), Liani Taylor (Daughter of Smoke & Bone), Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy), George RR Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), and others.

On Wednesday, July 31 at 1 PM at Brookline Senior Center, join us for this very special and important event. Race and Song was born in 2020 out of a deep bond and nearly 30-year friendship between veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours Reggie Harris and Alastair Moock. Together in musical conversation, the two explore complex issues of race, class, gender, and history, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. One of Alastair and Reggie’s greatest strengths as a duo is their ability to meet audiences where they are, adapting their conversation and musical repertoire for a wide range of ages and experiences.
For adults who want to deepen their understanding of antiracism and get more comfortable talking about difficult subjects, Race and Song is an invitation to listen, learn, and engage. Reggie and Alastair have performed together at theaters, arts centers, houses of worship, libraries, senior centers, and universities nationwide, modeling what productive interracial conversations about race can look like while swapping tunes and inviting audience participation in a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere.
This program is generously co-sponsored by The Brookline Senior Center, The Brookline Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations, Hebrew SeniorLife | Center Communities of Brookline, Goddard House Assisted Living & Memory Support, The Public Library of Brookline, The Brookline Department of Public Health and Human Services, and BrooklineCAN.
Please register at 617-730-2770!
