Sardoine Awarded the 2026 Edith Pearlman Writing Prize
|
|
|
A budding novelist who writes for an hour a day, every day, Sardoine, a rising senior at Brookline High School, is this year’s winner of the Edith Pearlman Creative Writing Award. The prize, sponsored by the Trustees of the Brookline Library, celebrates a student who has demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in creative writing. It honors Edith Pearlman (1936-2023), a highly acclaimed short-story writer and long-time resident of Brookline.

Sardoine considers the hour at her desk her sacred writing time. Her dedication has paid off: she was selected for “Emerson Writes,” a workshop for young writers run by Emerson College, and has recently published a short story. As a participant in MIT’s Leaders in Training Program, she researched the benefits of creative writing for teens and then led a writing club at the High School.

An inspiration to young talents like Sardoine, Edith Pearlman was praised by fellow writers for creating characters with “dark secrets and sharp wits” and for “capturing the complex and surprising turns in seemingly ordinary lives.” The Pearlman prize, which includes copies of the author’s short story anthologies, was presented at the BHS Awards ceremony on April 28. Congratulations, Sardoine!

Celebrating AANHPI Month
|

Contributions AANHPI Have Made to American History Exhibit
On display May 2 - May 30 in Hunneman Hall at the Brookline Village Library
|
|
AAPIEC Inc. in collaboration with the Town of Brookline is celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month with two events: This exhibit and the AAPIEC Inc. Workshop and Exhibit Reception on May 21.
|
|
This exhibit was created to define who AANHPIs are (over 100 different ethnic groups) and to share the history and culture of these ethnic groups. In addition, there are thousands of AANHPIs who have served in the military with medals of honor and contributed as Supreme Court Judges, Nobel Prize Winners, Astronauts etc. to American History that very few people know about and would be very surprised who they are. AANHPI is part of American History. You will come away after viewing the exhibit saying, “I didn’t know that”.

Celebrating AANHPI Month with Tiger and Magpie
On display in May in the lobby of the Brookline Village Library

Korean Minhwa artist and Brookline resident Yoonkyoung Ahn presents a special exhibit exploring the tiger and magpie, two beloved figures in traditional Korean folk painting. Through a playful comparison between contemporary pop-culture imagery as seen in K-Pop Demon Hunters, and a centuries-old Joseon-era painting, the exhibit shows how Minhwa has long used humor, symbolism, and imagination to express ordinary people’s hopes, values, and even critiques of political power. Ahn’s work bridges tradition and modern life, inviting audiences across cultures and generations to see Korean folk art as accessible, relatable, and full of life.
