Kerisa Ramirez wins this year’s Edith Pearlman Creative Writing Award
|
|
|
Since 2016 the Library Trustees have sponsored an award celebrating a creative writing talent at Brookline High School. Previously, the award has been given to short story writers, poets, writers of personal narratives, and playwrights. This year, for the first time, a novelist has won the prize. Kerisa Ramirez, a rising senior, is the author of a 200+ page novel and is working on another. Her teacher, Ben Berman, calls her “extraordinary—so invested and so talented.” Kerisa’s award is named for the late Edith Pearlman, who lived in Brookline for many years and was described in the New York Times Book Review as “one of the most essential short story visionaries of our time.” The award was presented at BHS’s annual awards ceremony on April 29 by Trustee Karen Livingston and Edith Pearlman’s son, Charles. Congratulations, Kerisa!

Saturday, May 10 at 10 AM
Join us with DPW's Parks and Open Space Division for a guided walking tour of this historic local landmark to commemorate its 150th anniversary! We'll be meeting on the lawn of the Putterham Library starting at 9:30 AM and departing at 10 AM sharp, so please arrive early to secure your spot. We'll walk there together as a group and spend about an hour touring the cemetery at a leisurely pace while being educated by our guides about Walnut Hills Cemetery's land, history, and significance. More activities will follow at Walnut Hills Cemetery and Putterham Library.

This program is open to adults of all ages and children 10 and up -- no registration required! Capacity is limited to 40 attendees on a first come, first served basis.

In the event of bad weather, this event will take place at the same time on Saturday, May 17. We will make an announcement and update the calendar as soon as possible if this is the case.

Join us for a special movie screening at Brookline Village! Kids will get the chance to decorate their own car using a cardboard box and art supplies. Park your car in our Hunneman Hall Drive-In Movie Theater. Refreshments will be provided. This program is best for kids ages 3-7 and their families. A free ticket is needed and will be available at the door.
