Update on Building Capacity

As we enter September and the start of the school year, please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the Library's COVID safety procedures: Library staff will be monitoring building capacity. If we are at maximum capacity, you may experience a wait before you can enter the buildings. There are displays around the Library entrances which show our current capacity. Otherwise, there is no time limit on your visit.

The Children’s, Tween, and Teen Rooms at Brookline Village, and the Children’s Room at Coolidge Corner, will have separate capacity limits enforced as of September 1, 2021. Children and families will be asked to enter the Brookline Village Children's Room through our newly opened Garden entrance, behind the monument near School St. When those rooms reach capacity, no one else may enter. This will mean that at times, some guests will not be able to enter the library and families should not plan on the Library being a standard part of their after school care plan.

Eating or drinking is temporarily not allowed at all Brookline Libraries. This does not apply to babies who need to nurse or need a bottle, or to anyone who needs a sip of water. Masks covering the mouth and nose continue to be required, and all Library programming will be virtual. For additional information, please see our COVID-19 Updates and our most recent Letter from the Library Director.

Library Closed for Labor Day

All Public Library of Brookline locations will be closed Monday, September 6 for Labor Day. Regular hours will resume Tuesday, September 7.

Please note that all Brookline Libraries will open at noon on Thursday, September 9, due to staff development.

Two exhibits are on view at the Brookline Village Library through September 15. In the Foundation Case, the Brookline Commission on Disability celebrates the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act and showcases disability history and inclusion. In the Lobby and Emery Cases, former Brookline Preservation Planner Greer Hardwicke introduces you to some of the Brookline women who played central roles in major events and policy battles of the suffrage cause, both for and against.

On display at the Coolidge Corner Library is Melting Into the World: Landscape Paintings by Diana Stelin (pictured above). This exhibit of landscape paintings by Brookline resident Diana Stelin opens on September 2. Stelin is an award-winning artist, educator, author, and fashion designer. Her pieces are featured in dozens of private and corporate collections. The exhibit will be on view through the end of October.

On the wall gallery at the Putterham Library, Inspired by Bolivia reflects the drama that painter Maria Termini saw and felt in the exciting shapes and colors of the land. It is on view through the end of September.

You can read more about all of our exhibits on the Library website.

Virtual Screening of Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck

Hit and Run History Stephano logo

MONDAY, September 13 at 6:30 PM

The Brookline Interactive Group and the Public Library of Brookline present a joint broadcast of Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck, followed by an interactive Q&A with Emmy-nominated filmmaker Andrew Giles Buckley. The film and Q&A will air on BIG’s television, Facebook, and YouTube channels.

The 90-minute film follows the story of Stephen Hopkins, the only Mayflower passenger who had been to North America previously. A decade earlier, Hopkins had been aboard a Jamestown-bound ship that wrecked on Bermuda, inspiring Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest. Buckley, a Hopkins descendant, grew up hearing stories that New Plymouth’s iconoclast tavern keeper may have been the model of The Tempest’s drunken and mutinous Stephano. Shot on location, Buckley and the intrepid Hit and Run History crew retrace Hopkins’ life crisscrossing the Atlantic.
