Virtual Screening of Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck

MONDAY, September 13 at 6:30 PM

The Brookline Interactive Group and the Public Library of Brookline present a joint broadcast of Stephano: The True Story of Shakespeare’s Shipwreck, followed by an interactive Q&A with Emmy-nominated filmmaker Andrew Giles Buckley. The film and Q&A will air on BIG’s television, Facebook, and YouTube channels.

The 90-minute film follows the story of Stephen Hopkins, the only Mayflower passenger who had been to North America previously. A decade earlier, Hopkins had been aboard a Jamestown-bound ship that wrecked on Bermuda, inspiring Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest. Buckley, a Hopkins descendant, grew up hearing stories that New Plymouth’s iconoclast tavern keeper may have been the model of The Tempest’s drunken and mutinous Stephano. Shot on location, Buckley and the intrepid Hit and Run History crew retrace Hopkins’ life crisscrossing the Atlantic.
