200 Books Before Middle School
|
|
We’re excited to introduce 200 Books Before Middle School, a brand new self-paced reading challenge designed for students in kindergarten through fifth grade (ages 5-11)! Habitual reading has an incredible impact on many aspects of a child’s development, including vocabulary, creativity, social skills, and empathy. We want to encourage this age group to read consistently to help them grow into lifelong readers.

Participating in the challenge is easy and fun: there are no assigned books, no reports to write, and no deadlines (other than finishing before middle school). And for every 50 books read, your child will earn a small prize to motivate them to keep reading. We invite you to start this program anytime from when your child enters kindergarten to when they begin middle school, or enter sixth grade. Sign up here!

Girls Who Code
|

Join this year's Girls Who Code club! Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization leading the movement to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st-century opportunities. We are hosting this year’s club for girls ages 10 up through 18 (grades 5 to 12). This year’s club starts Wednesday, September 22 at 6:30 PM on Zoom. Tween/Teen Virtual Board Game Cafe: 7 Wonders

WEDNESDAY, October 6 at 4 PM
|
Learn a new board game from the Public Library of Brookline collection – virtually! we’ll be learning and playing the award winning game, 7 Wonders.
|
All participants will need to set up free accounts on Board Game Arena and Discord before the game begins. While players can use any device to play, a computer with speakers and microphone is a plus. All players can also participate through text. Because we’re all learning a board game together, we ask attendees to log in as close to the start of the game as possible.
|
Players will receive an email on the day of the program inviting them to the game. Players can take a look at the instructions HERE, but knowledge of the game is not required.

This game is limited to six players, teens and tweens grades 5-12. Registration via Eventbrite is required. Sign up here.

Virtual Taiji Qigong
|
|
Starting WEDNESDAY, October 13 at 10:30 AM
|
This series of 10 classes will introduce a breathing and movement practice called Taiji Qigong 18 Forms. This set, developed by Professor Lin Hou Sheng, is made up of a combination of movements from Taiji Chuan (Tai Chi) and Qigong breathing and movements. All classes are drop-in, so you can attend any or all sessions.

When done regularly, this set has been shown to promote relaxation. It is simple to learn and the moves can be adapted to suit the needs of the individual. We will also work with various auxiliary practices to support the learning of the Taiji Qigong set, including some joint and muscle limbering movements, breathing exercises, and standing and seated meditation practice.

Virtual Introduction to the Museum Of Bad Art

THURSDAY, October 14 at 7 PM
|
Meet the Museum Of Bad Art, dedicated to the collection, preservation, exhibition, and celebration of bad art in all its forms. The MOBA exhibits art that will be seen in no other venue. Since 1993, they have collected art from thrift stores, yard sales, sidewalk trash, and even the artists themselves. They analyze, compare to classic art, and share with fans around the world.

At this talk, Louise Reilly Sacco, Permanent Acting Interim Executive Director of the Museum Of Bad Art, will introduce the museum and its collection. She will present pieces from the MOBA with insightful, pithy, and often humorous commentary. After the talk, you’ll have a chance to ask your questions in an interactive Q&A.
