Virtual Family Trivia Night

People answering Trivia. Text in center speech bubble reads "Virtual Family Trivia Night"

WEDNESDAY, February 9 at 7 PM

Put your knowledge of books to the test and join us for a fun night of virtual family trivia! Our trivia winners will receive prizes, so don’t miss out! This program is for kids and adults of all ages and will be hosted on Zoom.

Click here to register for the Zoom link!

Some important details for this event: You will need TWO DEVICES in order to enjoy the optimal experience – a computer/smart phone (to join the program on Zoom) and a smart phone or tablet (to play the game). If you’re playing with multiple people in the same household, only one person needs to register for and open the Zoom call. The remaining players can play the game from other devices (one per person). You can also play as one team, in which case, you’d only need one other device.

This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brookline Public Library.

A Note from the Friends of the Brookline Library

The Friends of the Brookline Library are pleased to announce that the Book Sale is open again on the ground floor of the Brookline Village Library, with a growing supply of books, CDs, and DVDs.

At this point, we still cannot accept book donations, though we will be sure to announce when donations can resume. In the meantime, take a look at the Book Sale the next time you're at the Brookline Village Library and see what you discover!

Virtual Poetry Reading

poetry reading 2022.02.19

SATURDAY, February 19 at 2 PM

Please join Brookline poet laureate Jennifer Barber as she hosts a virtual poetry reading featuring Somerville poet laureate Lloyd Schwartz and Boston’s 2020 youth poet laureate Alondra Bobadilla. A Q&A will follow the reading.

Lloyd Schwartz is Poet Laureate of Somerville, Mass., Frederick S. Troy Professor of English Emeritus at UMass Boston, an editor of the works of Elizabeth Bishop, and an arts critic for NPR’s Fresh Air and WBUR’s the ARTery. He has been awarded NEA, Guggenheim, and Academy of American Poets fellowships in poetry and a Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. His latest book is Who’s on First?—New and Selected Poems.

Alondra Bobadilla was named Boston’s first-ever Youth Poet Laureate in January of 2020. Her poetry demonstrates how creative expression can be a powerful tool for youth to examine feelings around issues, find their voice, and speak up about the changes they want to see for their future. Her collection of poems is entitled With Clipped Wings, and she is a student at UMass Boston majoring in International Relations with a minor in Dance.

Jennifer Barber is Brookline Poet Laureate for 2021-2024. Her new collection, forthcoming in 2022 from The Word Works, is The Sliding Boat Our Bodies Made.

Black History Month Book Recommendations

Me Moth final pic
To celebrate Black History Month, we asked our staff to recommend works by Black creators. Reference Librarian Lily chose Me (Moth) by Amber McBride. "This teen novel in verse follows Moth, a grieving girl, and Sani, a boy who seems to truly see her, as they embark on a road trip together. The writing is simply beautiful, haunting and vibrant at the same time." Borrow it here!

Looking for more books to read to celebrate Black History Month? Check out our displays at any of the three Brookline Libraries, or ask us for personalized recommendations.
