English Language Learning Updates!
|
|
The Public Library of Brookline is pleased to announce the return of our one-on-one English tutoring program. In this program, adult English Language Learners meet weekly with a volunteer tutor to practice English, get to know each other, and learn about Brookline.
|
If you are curious about other cultures and can commit to a weekly language tutoring session for six months, consider becoming a volunteer English language tutor at the Public Library of Brookline. No teaching experience or world language knowledge is required. We will provide training and resources!
|

We are signing up tutors first, but we'll start accepting student applications soon, so stay tuned for more news. We look forward to growing our English language tutoring program with you!

We are also delighted to launch our brand new English Language Learning Kits! ELL Kits are tote bags full of books and materials on a variety of themes, all geared toward English Language Learners. You can check out kits on the following themes at all Brookline Library locations: Get Reading, Get Cooking, Brookline and Boston, Exploring Nature, Family Reading, and Word Games!

ELL Kits have four-week loan times and may be renewed (unless there is a waitlist). All kits must be checked out and returned at their owning location. You can request a kit through our online catalog, or by asking a librarian.

Tween/Teen Escape Room Kit: Chase Through History!
|
|
The Archivist Travel Agency needs your help! What kind of travel, you ask? Time travel, of course! A mysterious time traveler is disrupting history, and it’s up to you to follow them through time and stop them to protect the timeline! All the clues, ciphers, codes, and hints you need to crack the case are included in one handy kit.
|
Kit reservations begin Monday, March 21. When reserving your kit, please select the Public Library of Brookline location where you would like to pick it up. Kit pickups begin Monday, March 28! This kit is meant for tweens and teens in grades 5-12 and their families. We recommend completing the escape room as a group! LIMIT ONE KIT PER FAMILY. Registration via Eventbrite is required. Show or Tell? Languages of Love in Asian American Families

Parents around the world express love and care for their children, but they do so in very different ways. Some parents express their affection verbally, while others may express care with actions, non-verbal behaviors, and even with words that seem more critical than affectionate.
|
In this talk, Professor Stephen Chen will present findings from his research on patterns of love and affection among Asian American immigrant parents. He’ll examine how these parents navigate Asian and American norms of affection, how acculturation shapes their emotional processes, and ultimately, how they “translate” their language of affection for their children.
|
Stephen Chen is an Associate Professor of Psychology and director of the Culture, Family, and Development Lab at Wellesley College. His research examines how cultural and family processes influence mental health and development across the lifespan, primarily in under-represented, underserved, and at-risk populations. At Wellesley, his courses include Asian American Psychology, Cultural Psychology, and a seminar on Culture and Emotion. Chen’s research and teaching are both shaped by his experience as a K-12 school counselor and administrator in Shanghai, China. He is a member of the Association for Psychological Science, the Asian American Psychological Association, and the Society for Research in Child Development, where he is involved in the Asian Caucus and the Teaching Committee.
