Show or Tell? Languages of Love in Asian American Families

Parents around the world express love and care for their children, but they do so in very different ways. Some parents express their affection verbally, while others may express care with actions, non-verbal behaviors, and even with words that seem more critical than affectionate.
|
In this talk, Professor Stephen Chen will present findings from his research on patterns of love and affection among Asian American immigrant parents. He’ll examine how these parents navigate Asian and American norms of affection, how acculturation shapes their emotional processes, and ultimately, how they “translate” their language of affection for their children.
|
Stephen Chen is an Associate Professor of Psychology and director of the Culture, Family, and Development Lab at Wellesley College. His research examines how cultural and family processes influence mental health and development across the lifespan, primarily in under-represented, underserved, and at-risk populations. At Wellesley, his courses include Asian American Psychology, Cultural Psychology, and a seminar on Culture and Emotion. Chen’s research and teaching are both shaped by his experience as a K-12 school counselor and administrator in Shanghai, China. He is a member of the Association for Psychological Science, the Asian American Psychological Association, and the Society for Research in Child Development, where he is involved in the Asian Caucus and the Teaching Committee.

In-Person Programs Return in April
|
The Library is delighted to start bringing back in-person programming in April. In the next few weeks, we'll begin offering in-person and hybrid programs for all ages. Up first: our morning English Club for adult English language learners will meet on the ground floor of the Brookline Village Library starting this Friday, April 1 at 11 AM. And our afternoon LEGO Club for kids returns to the Coolidge Corner Library on Monday, April 4 at 3:15 PM!

Please note that every one ages 2 and up attending children's programs will be required to wear masks.
|
|
Want to keep attending programs virtually? Great! We'll still have lots of virtual options, including programs that will continue meeting entirely online and others that will become hybrid. For a full listing of in-person and virtual programs, check out our events calendar.

Vote & Run for GOV
|

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Relations and the Office of the Town Clerk in Brookline are launching the Vote & Run for GOV Program, partnering with organizations around town to talk to you about elections and civic engagement! The Library is delighted to host Vote & Run for GOV on the following afternoons:

Election Day in Brookline is May 3, 2022. Many seats will be up for election, including Select Board, School Committee, Library Trustee, Constable, and Town Meeting. Because of re-districting, almost every Town Meeting seat is up for election, so it is a great chance to ensure your voice is heard. Come register to vote, request an absentee ballot, learn about changes to precincts and polling locations, get information on running for office and how to engage civically, and ask any questions!

Flight Calls: Birding in Brookline and Beyond

|
Author and birder John Nelson presents an exploration of birds as inspirations for humans. Flight Calls: Birding in Brookline and Beyond will focus on Brookline’s significance in the history of birding, the birds and history of Mt. Auburn Cemetery, and the story of how one bird family–cranes–has inspired people around the world.
|
John Nelson is the author of the essay collection Flight Calls: Exploring Massachusetts through Birds. His essay “Funny Bird Sex” in the Antioch Review was awarded a 2018 Pushcart Prize, and his narrative “Coming of Old Age in Samoa” in The Missouri Review was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. A professor emeritus at North Shore Community College, John was the 2021 Visiting Writer at the college. He founded and chairs the Association of Massachusetts Bird Clubs, and he chairs the Conservation and Education Committee of the Brookline Bird Club. He lives with his wife Mary, to whom Flight Calls is dedicated, on a hilltop in the woods in Gloucester.
