The Library is delighted to participate in Brookline Porchfest 2022! This event features local musicians performing on porches all around town, and the Library will be hosting several bands. Stop by to see the following performers in concert:

- 12-1 PM at the Brookline Village Library: Polar Vortex
- 1-2 PM at the Brookline Village Library: Tim from School Night
- 2-3 PM at the Putterham Library: Vertigo Trio
- 3-4 PM at the Putterham Library: Antarctica
We recommend bringing a picnic blanket or folding chair to sit on. At the Brookline Village Library, your local librarians will also be stationed outdoors with free books, bookmarks, and more – so come say hello!

Become an English language tutor
The Public Library of Brookline is seeking volunteer tutors for our one-on-one language tutoring program. In this program, adult English language learners meet weekly with a volunteer tutor to practice English, get to know each other, and learn about Brookline.
If you are curious about other cultures and can commit to a weekly language tutoring session for six months, consider becoming a volunteer English language tutor at the Library. No teaching experience or world language knowledge is required. We will provide online training and tutoring resources.
To become a tutor, fill out a tutor application and an ELL coordinator will get in touch with you. We look forward to growing our English language tutoring program with you!

Become a facilitator with Girls Who Code
We are partnering with Girls Who Code to bring free computer science opportunities to girls across our community. We are looking for volunteers like you to help facilitate our Club and would love for you to become a Volunteer Facilitator at the Public Library of Brookline.
|
Through our free Girls Who Code Clubs (in-person or virtual) program, you can access free resources, 120+ hours of customizable plug and play curricula, inspiring women in tech spotlights, community-building activities, comprehensive support and training, and more to help our local 5th-12th graders be brave and resilient as they use code to change the world. Plus — NO prior coding experience needed to facilitate your Club!

Photography Exhibit Reception Rescheduled
|
|
Please note that the reception for The Bay State: A Multicultural Landscape has been rescheduled. Instead of taking place this coming Sunday, there will instead be a closing reception on the afternoon of Monday, November 7. This exhibit is currently on display in Hunneman Hall and can be viewed during Library hours.

Join us for a half hour of play and social development for 1- to 4-year-olds. All attendees must have a ticket from the Children’s Desk, which are available a half hour before the program begins. For the safety of patrons and staff, masks are strongly encouraged for ages 2 and older.

ELL Creative Writing Series: In Your Own Words

Join us for a fun, friendly series of three workshops on September 15, September 29, and October 13 as we explore the topic of creative writing in English. This program will help you build on your current knowledge and take your writing beyond a typical classroom setting. Become a part of a supportive group, and see how expressing yourself creatively can make your skills stronger.
|
|
This program is open to all adult English language learners who are comfortable writing full sentences in English – no creative writing experience required. This series includes three 90-minute writing workshops. You can attend any or all of the sessions. No registration required. Please note that we will not be able to accommodate children or strollers due to space constraints.

Susan Linn Author Talk

Join us at the Brookline Village Library for a very special visit from renowned local author Susan Linn. She will be discussing her new book, Who’s Raising the Kids?: Big Tech, Big Business, and the Lives of Children, on its launch date! Local independent bookstore Brookline Booksmith will be selling copies at the event starting at 6:30 PM, and Susan will be available to sign copies after the event.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technologies had become deeply embedded in children’s lives, despite a growing body of research detailing the harms of excessive immersion in the unregulated, powerfully seductive, profit-driven world of the “kid-tech” industry. From birth, kids have become lucrative fodder for a range of tech, media, and toy companies, from producers of exploitative games and social media platforms to “educational” technology and branded school curricula of dubious efficacy. In Who’s Raising the Kids? Linn—one of the world’s leading experts on the impact of Big Tech and big business on children—explores the roots and consequences of this monumental shift toward a digitized, commercialized childhood, focusing on kids’ values, relationships, and learning.

Susan Linn is a psychologist, award-winning ventriloquist, and a world-renowned expert on creative play and the impact of media and commercial marketing on children. She was the Founding Director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (now called Fairplay) and is currently research associate at Boston Children’s Hospital and lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
