Brookline Village Library

Join us at the Brookline Village Library for a very special visit from renowned local author Susan Linn. She will be discussing her new book, Who’s Raising the Kids?: Big Tech, Big Business, and the Lives of Children, on its launch date! Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, digital technologies had become deeply embedded in children’s lives, despite a growing body of research detailing the harms of excessive immersion in the unregulated, powerfully seductive, profit-driven world of the “kid-tech” industry. From birth, kids have become lucrative fodder for a range of tech, media, and toy companies, from producers of exploitative games and social media platforms to “educational” technology and branded school curricula of dubious efficacy. In Who’s Raising the Kids? Linn—one of the world’s leading experts on the impact of Big Tech and big business on children—explores the roots and consequences of this monumental shift toward a digitized, commercialized childhood, focusing on kids’ values, relationships, and learning.
Susan Linn is a psychologist, award-winning ventriloquist, and a world-renowned expert on creative play and the impact of media and commercial marketing on children. She was the Founding Director of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (now called Fairplay) and is currently research associate at Boston Children’s Hospital and lecturer on psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

The Hidden Beauty in Simplicity - Born and raised in Siberia, Lidia Mikhaylova spent most of her life working in the corporate world as a lawyer. After more than 15 years in Moscow, she decided to move to Riga, Latvia, to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming an artist. In Latvia, she became inspired by the colorful imagery of her surroundings and completely fell in love with painting. In the fall of 2019, Lidia had an opportunity to travel across the ocean and witness the incredible beauty of America, where she continues to transfer the beauty of the surrounding reality onto canvas or silk. On display through October 31.
