Water Protection Rights and Spirituality

Join us as we honor Indigenous Peoples Day at a special program that will open with traditional Danza and prayer, and will be followed by a panel discussion on Water Protection Rights. The participants will be Hiawatha Brown (Narragansett Elder), Liz Santana-Kiser (Nipmuc Elder) Kasike Jorge Estevez (Taino) and Robert Quesada (Mexika/Aztec).

- Issues concerning water quality, fishing rights, and industrial pollution

Making Comics with Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Meet comics creator Jarrett J. Krosoczka at 3:30 PM on Thursday, October 20, at the Brookline Village Library in Hunneman Hall on our second floor. At this event, Jarrett J. Krosoczka will discuss how he got to be a cartoonist and break down how and why comics work. He will be doing live demos of drawing and will have time to answer questions. Titles will be on sale courtesy of the Brookline Booksmith and there will be a signing following the event.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka, known since boyhood as “JJK,” is the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator behind more than forty books for young readers, including his wildly popular Lunch Lady graphic novels, select volumes of the Star Wars™: Jedi Academy series, and Hey, Kiddo, which was a National Book Award Finalist. Krosoczka creates books with humor, heart, and deep respect for his young readers—qualities that have made his titles perennial favorites on the bookshelves of homes, libraries, and bookstores over the past twenty years.

This event is limited to 90 participants (including chaperones.) Please have at least one chaperone per two children. Masks encouraged. This event is presented in partnership with the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE) and generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brookline Library. Mexican Masks and Other Creations - The artisans of Mexico’s 32 states express their cultures, ancestry, and customs through their art in a variety of ways. During Luis Carvajal’s travels, he has collected the wonderful and unique creations in this exhibit. Included are replicas of an array of masks used in Mexico since 3000 B.C.E., as well as Masks of the Devil, some of which include real goat horns. This collection highlights the Mexican artisans who preserve their heritage through their artwork. On display on the main floor through November 6.

Sofia’s Cat Collection and Marta’s Car Collection - Check out the collections on display in the Children’s Room! Sofia shares her cat collection. Sofia is 6 years old. Her cat collection includes keychains, a pencil, and toys of different shapes and sizes. And Marta shares her car collection. Marta is 4 years old, and she loves her big sister, Sofia! Marta’s collection includes an ambulance, taxi cab, and Volkswagen Beetles. On display through October 17.

Coins & Cards - This exhibit features coins of silver and other metals from the USA, Great Britain, Canada, and France, all collected by Coolidge Corner Library Senior Page Tom in 2022. Also on view are three small semi-precious stones, two contemporary postcards, and one homemade notecard. None of these items is of great monetary value, but Tom has fun collecting them. On display through November 29.

An Evening with Ben Mezrich:
Exploring the Mind of a Literary Rockstar

Have you always wanted to know how to write a best-seller? Craft the script for an award-winning Hollywood movie? Bring down the house at Las Vegas? Create and produce a hit TV show? Have a lucrative career doing what you love? Ben Mezrich has accomplished all these things and many more. Known as the “reigning cowboy of narrative non-fiction,” Mezrich will be at the Brookline High School on October 12 to share some of the secrets of his success.
An Evening with Ben Mezrich: Exploring the Mind of a Literary Rock Star will present Cambridge-based Mezrich, a lively and provocative author, scriptwriter, and adventurer, in conversation with the multi-talented Hank Phillippi Ryan, USA Today bestselling writer of acclaimed mystery novels and Emmy-winning investigative reporter for Boston’s 7News. The event is free and open to the public. Copies of Mezrich’s and Ryan’s books will be available for purchase through the Brookline Booksmith, and both authors will be available to sign their books. This event is generously sponsored by the Library Trustees.

Abortion Rights in a Post-Roe World
|
|
THURSDAY, October 20 at 7 PM
|
In this virtual talk, Professor Shoshanna Ehrlich will discuss how Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization – the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade – came about, what it means for those living in abortion-hostile states, and how states like Massachusetts are reacting to the decision by seeking to expand and protect abortion access. Professor Ehrlich will offer an up-to-date picture of the current crisis over abortion access in the wake of this dramatic reconfiguration of the legal landscape. This virtual program is for adults and teens and will include a Q&A.

Shoshanna Ehrlich is a professor in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department at UMass Boston. Her interdisciplinary scholarship and advocacy focuses on the legal regulation of reproductive and sexual rights, with a particular focus on the rights of teens. Her books include: Abortion Regret: The New Attack on Women’s Reproductive Freedom (co-authored with Alesha E. Doan, 2019); Regulating Desire: From the Virtuous Maiden to the Purity Princess (2014); and Who Decides? The Abortion Rights of Minors (2006). Professor Ehrlich has also published extensively in law journals on these and related topics. Her most recent articles address the abortion rights of undocumented teens and the child marriage reform movement in the United States.
