Abortion Rights in a Post-Roe World
|

In this virtual talk, Professor Shoshanna Ehrlich will discuss how Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization – the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade – came about, what it means for those living in abortion-hostile states, and how states like Massachusetts are reacting to the decision by seeking to expand and protect abortion access. Professor Ehrlich will offer an up-to-date picture of the current crisis over abortion access in the wake of this dramatic reconfiguration of the legal landscape. This virtual program is for adults and teens and will include a Q&A.

Shoshanna Ehrlich is a professor in the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department at UMass Boston. Her interdisciplinary scholarship and advocacy focuses on the legal regulation of reproductive and sexual rights, with a particular focus on the rights of teens. Her books include: Abortion Regret: The New Attack on Women’s Reproductive Freedom (co-authored with Alesha E. Doan, 2019); Regulating Desire: From the Virtuous Maiden to the Purity Princess (2014); and Who Decides? The Abortion Rights of Minors (2006). Professor Ehrlich has also published extensively in law journals on these and related topics. Her most recent articles address the abortion rights of undocumented teens and the child marriage reform movement in the United States.

Making Comics with Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Meet comics creator Jarrett J. Krosoczka at 3:30 PM on Thursday, October 20, at the Brookline Village Library in Hunneman Hall on our second floor. At this event, Jarrett J. Krosoczka will discuss how he got to be a cartoonist and break down how and why comics work. He will be doing live demos of drawing and will have time to answer questions. Titles will be on sale courtesy of the Brookline Booksmith and there will be a signing following the event.

Jarrett J. Krosoczka, known since boyhood as “JJK,” is the New York Times bestselling author/illustrator behind more than forty books for young readers, including his wildly popular Lunch Lady graphic novels, select volumes of the Star Wars™: Jedi Academy series, and Hey, Kiddo, which was a National Book Award Finalist. Krosoczka creates books with humor, heart, and deep respect for his young readers—qualities that have made his titles perennial favorites on the bookshelves of homes, libraries, and bookstores over the past twenty years.

This event is limited to 90 participants (including chaperones.) Please have at least one chaperone per two children. Masks encouraged. This event is presented in partnership with the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE) and generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brookline Library. Starting this week, our English Language Learning programs will now meet at 10:30 AM. English Club, Grammar & More, and the ELL Film Group will still meet on the same days, but they will all now begin at 10:30 AM. This campaign will use tabletop, pens, and paper play. No computers or voice chat needed. All character sheets, pencils, and dice will be provided.

Tour guide Jarrod will be giving a presentation to explore the macabre tales of Boston and Salem from centuries and decades past. All accounts given are researched and up-to-date to ensure you have the best, most chilling experience possible. Lovers of history, the paranormal, or simply those interested in discovering the darker side of New England are encouraged to attend! Self-Defense & Energy
With The Boston School of Boabom

Join us at the Library as we partner with The Boston School of Boabom to learn basic self defense techniques in a fun, positive class. Based in Boabom, a Tibetan system of self-defense, relaxation, and meditation, this class will teach you a variety of simple but effective ways to remain calm in a tense situation and defend yourself should you need to. We will also learn some fundamental breathing and stretching, along with techniques to evade, escape, and defend ourselves. Partner practice will be an optional part of the class. All are welcome!
