Settler-Colonist Ties to Thanksgiving & Columbus: Taking Back the Narrative
|

Missing information, inaccurate stories, and stereotypes perpetuate myths about Columbus and Thanksgiving. When we can’t describe an accurate First Nations perspective, it’s often because we have grown up in a system that has made hard truths invisible. In this presentation, we will explore this colonial system through primary sources and examine how language perpetuates invisibility and how we can dismantle oppression to bring accurate counter-narratives to life.

About the presenter: Claudia A. Fox Tree (she, her) identifies as a multiracial Indigenous woman. Since 2000, Claudia has been on the Massachusetts Center for Native American Awareness board. MCNAA’s mission is to preserve Native American cultural traditions; to assist Native American residents with basic needs and educational expenses; to advance public knowledge and understanding, to dispel inaccurate information about Native People, and work towards racial equality by addressing racial issues and inequities across the region. Since 1998, Claudia has been a Massachusetts liaison for the United Confederation of Taino People, headquartered in New York. Claudia is a tribal member of the Iukaieke Guainia Taino-Arawak Tribal Community. She is currently a doctoral student at Lesley University. Claudia is also a polymer clay artist, blogger, and mother to five young adults (and four cats).

Children’s Book Author and Illustrator Event
with Linda Cutting and Leonie Little-Lex

Join local author and illustrator duo Linda Cutting and Leonie Little-Lex for a picture book read-aloud and Q&A session! Listen to them share their new book, A is for Always: An Adoption Alphabet, engage in an author-led activity, and finish off with a Q&A session to ask all your burning questions about writing and illustrating an alphabet book. November is National Adoption Month, making this a perfect event to attend to hear about different experiences with adoption.

This program is aimed at kids ages 4-10 and their families. Masks are encouraged. Free tickets are required for this event and will be available at the Children’s Desk starting at 2:30 PM the day of the event.

Get ready to roll dice, flip cards, and traverse game boards at our family game night celebrating International Games Month! Join us in the Tween Room at the Brookline Village Library between 6:30 and 7:30 PM with your family to play a variety of board games. Play a classic like Clue, Candyland, or Sorry, or try your hand at something new like Hoot Owl Hoot, Ticket to Ride: First Journey, or Sneaky Snacky Squirrel. This is a drop-in event, but space at game tables may be limited. We have games available for kids ages 3 and up.

Bring your young writers and join authors and poets Kianny Antigua, Mía Montás, and Tanya M. Paris for some story reading! They will guide children through the process of writing a story and help them put their own stories down on paper. All materials will be provided.

Harvesting Stories: Author Event for Adults

Dominican poets and authors Kianny Antigua, Keiselim Montás, Tanya M. Paris, and María Victoria chronicle the joys and challenges of Caribbean and Mainland experiences. Join them for a poetry reading. Afterwards, there will be a moderated panel discussion and Q&A session where they will share their personal writing journeys.

Looking for something to do after school on early dismissal days? Join us at 1 PM for a family-friendly movie in Hunneman Hall (on the second floor of the Brookline Village Library). We will mainly be showing popular Disney and Pixar movies with a PG rating. This program is intended for kids ages 5 and older. Any children ages 8 and younger MUST have an adult with them in the room at all times.

Diversity in Art - The multinational members of the International Women’s Club of Boston (IWCB) are pleased to display their eclectic artistic styles through a variety of media including quilts, photography, pastel paintings, acrylic paintings, graphite drawings, and more. On display in Hunneman Hall and on the main floor through January 11.

Bella’s Doll Collection and Nico’s LEGO Collection - Check out the collections on display in the Children’s Room! In our flat case, Bella shares her doll collection. Bella is eight years old and a third grader at Pierce School. Some of these dolls were gifted to her by friends and family. Bella hopes you enjoy them! In our wall case, Nico shares his LEGO Mech collection. Nico is seven years old and a second grader at Pierce School. Nico’s friend, April, helped him set up this LEGO collection. Nico wants to design robots when he grows up! On display through November 21.
