From the Special Collections

FiremenStationD1905
Our Special Collections librarians have been diligently working on digitizing Brookline's newspapers over the last few years. We know that it's a great resource for researching our local history, and it's always a triumph when the newspapers help answer local history questions like this one:

Our friends at the Historical Society posted a photo of the fire department, Station D from 1905, which was sent in by firefighter Lyons's great-grandchild. Another descendant then identified William Norris. Unfortunately, the Historical Society couldn't find reference to Norris in annual directories - but they did find one in the Brookline Press! The paper reported that Norris was at Station D, but was only there for a few months. The annual directory wouldn't have noted this fleeting posting.

If you are planning on doing your own dive into local history, don't forget that all patrons are able to access the newspapers through our local history page. All papers are fully searchable within the database; researchers can download content or share links that go directly to the section in question. Thanks to Larry Barbaras for passing on this success!
