Remembering Edith Pearlman
|
The Trustees of the Public Library of Brookline express our condolences to the family of writer Edith Pearlman, who passed away this month at the age of 86.
|
Since 2016, Brookline High School has presented the Edith Pearlman Creative Writing Award to a talented young writer in the junior or senior class. The 2022 winner was Seraph Bales. The award was established by the Trustees to honor Pearlman, who the Boston Globe called “our greatest living short story writer.”
|
Edith Pearlman was a long-time resident of Brookline, celebrated for her non-fiction and travel writing and especially for her short fiction. Her essays appeared in The Atlantic, Smithsonian Magazine, The New York Times, and many other publications.
|
Among her acclaimed books of short stories is the anthology, Binocular Vision, which was nominated for the National Book Award for fiction in 2011 and won the National Book Critics Circle award in 2012.
|
Writing about Pearlman’s book, Honeydew (2015), the novelist Ann Patchett said that “Pearlman has always had… this capacity to draw beauty from loss.” New Yorker literary critic James Wood saw in her writing a “fascination with the difference between seeing and understanding.”
|
To the frequently asked question, “Where do you get your ideas?” Pearlman responded, “My ideas come from musings, from observation, from memory; from reading, from travel, from movies, from anecdotes heard or overheard, faces on the subway and rooms seen through a window.” Her words, and her work, have long been an inspiration to aspiring writers.

Flash Fiction Writing Workshop

TUESDAY, January 10, at 7 PM
|
Start off the year with creativity at our flash fiction writing workshop! Authors Chandreyee Lahiri and Malavika Shetty will discuss their own writing journeys, give an introduction to flash fiction (very short stories), and provide a writing prompt. Then everyone will have a chance to write their own piece of flash fiction. Come write with us, whether you’ve been writing for a while or you want to give creative writing a try.

Introducing a new, weekly program: Building for Babies and Toddlers! Starting Tuesday, January 10, join us for 30 minutes of fine motor skill development and social development for ages 0-4. We provide a variety of building materials for free-play and construction. Building helps build fine motor skills by strengthening muscles and improving coordination.

Teens: join us for a tea tasting event presenting all types and blends of teas that represent characters from your favorite fandoms. Everyone will rate the teas according to flavor, whether they feel they represent the characters or fandom, and whether they would enjoy drinking the tea again.

Everyone can sample teas while supplies last! Please be sure to check our ingredients lists for each tea before consuming. Open to teens in grades 8-12. This event is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Brookline Public Library.

TBR is “to be read.” and we all have stacks we know we can’t read in our lifetime. KJ will talk about what she’s reading and loving or looking forward to reading in the near future.

We’re looking forward to spending some time with KJ, hearing all about her favorite books and authors in a variety of genres. Bring a pen and paper—you’ll be wanting to write down all of KJ’s recs!

The Music of Listening with Susan Rogers, PhD

Professor of cognitive neuroscience and former record producer (Prince, David Byrne, Barenaked Ladies) Susan Rogers presents a new model of music cognition that describes the “listener profile”—a constellation of individualized preferences mapped to an array of musical and aesthetic dimensions. Her book on music listening for W. W. Norton is titled This Is What It Sounds Like: What the Music You Love Says About You.
