Celebrating Black History Month
|
|
Black History Month begins this week, and the Library is celebrating all month long. We'll have book displays at all Library locations, as well as kids' activities in the Children's Room. We also invite you to participate in our Black History Month programs:

The 86th Village: An Evening with Sena Desai Gopal
|
|
|
|
THURSDAY, February 2 at 7 PM
|
|
Sena Desai Gopal is the author of the novel The 86th Village and a journalist specializing in science and medicine, food, and travel. Her work has been published in The Boston Globe, The Atlantic, Modern Farmer, and The Times of India, among others. In this talk, she will address the growing problem, often referred to as “Managed Retreat,” of how to resettle people displaced by floods, fires, droughts, and more. Governments around the world are struggling to find the means to help victims of natural and manmade catastrophes, and falling short because they do not have the money or the know-how. The talk will be informed by the author’s experience growing up in Yadahalli, a village in Southern India that will one day drown in the backwaters of one of India’s biggest, most ambitious dams, The Upper Krishna Project.

Rose Lerner & Olivia Waite Author Talk

THURSDAY, February 16 at 7 PM

Rose Lerner and Olivia Waite are romance authors with a gift for creating characters who are deeply relatable, are beautifully flawed, and earn their happily ever afters. Their research into 19th-century England gives their writing context and detail. Join us for an author talk and Q&A with Rose and Olivia in celebration of Valentine’s Day! We’ll discuss their writing processes, how they research historical details, and how they craft historical happily ever afters. We’ll be highlighting Rose’s new book, Sailor’s Delight, and Olivia’s The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows.

On Display at the Library
|
|
Tagua Nut Carvings - Judith Clark’s collection of tagua nut carvings is currently on display at the Brookline Village Library. Tagua nuts are the seeds of certain species of palm trees. These carvings are made by artists in Panama and Colombia. On display through March 1.
|

Maya’s Cat Collection and Ethan’s LEGO Collection - Check out the collections on display in the Children’s Room! In our flat case, Maya shares her collection of cat stuffed animals. Maya is 7 years old and she loves cats because they are cute. In our wall case, Ethan shares his LEGO collection. Ethan is 5 years old and he likes LEGO and Mario. On display through February 6.
