Learn Something New: Understanding Comics!

Learn Something New (1)
Brookline Village

MONDAY, June 18 at 7 PM

Comics are their own storytelling format and can tell all kinds of stories. Whether you pour over the Sunday comic strips, read stacks of Japanese manga, or settle in with the latest graphic novel memoir, there is a title for you. This year marks the 25th anniversary of Scott McCloud’s landmark text Understanding Comics, a guide to how comics work written in the format. Everyone from new comics readers to long-time enthusiasts are invited to join the library’s resident comics expert Robin Brenner to learn how to decode visual cues, read in between the panels, and understand how this hybrid medium engages our brains.

This event is part of the Learn Something New series. Generously sponsored by the Library Trustees.

New England Birds of Prey

wingmasters - JIM PARKS
Putterham Library

TUESDAY, June 19 at 3 PM

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey, gives an overview of these different categories.

Because many birds of prey are declining in number, this presentation also features one or more of the endangered raptors that WINGMASTERS cares for, and explains why these species face an uncertain future.

This program is for ages 3 years old and up. Registration required.

MEET STAFF PETS

Pet Photos (3)

London-Q and Ferdinand

What you call them every day other than their name: Q and Ferdie.
A favorite quirk in their behavior: Well, she is a cat but we never know if Q is feeling affectionate or about to go into attack mode. Ferdinand does not bark.
Favorite sleeping spot: For Q, anywhere my son is at the time. For Ferdinand, in his bed beside the couch.
Can they do a trick?
No tricks. However, Ferdinand has a job! He works for a florist in Montpelier, VT, where he lives. He greets customers at the door. When they are ready to purchase he goes behind the counter and places paws up on the desk. When they depart, he escorts them to the door. On the job he is very open to affection while also being quite sensitive and respectful to those who do not want his attention.
