Epic Jazz Fantasy with the Greg Loughman Trio

Epic Jazz Fantasy with the Greg Loughman Trio

July 30, 2024 7:00 PM @ Brookline Village - Hunneman Hall

As part of Summer Reading , the library offers this all-ages program!

What do Yebba, JRR Tolkein, and Jazz have in common? Come find out as the Greg Loughman trio leads you on a jazz-infused exploration of epic fantasy novels. With this concert, we will highlight a diverse group of epic fantasy fiction writers and describe the works they have written while performing music related to their stories. If you enjoy jazz, you’ll love how Greg Loughman’s trio uses epic fantasy authors and works as inspiration for their jazz compositions and performance. If you’re a fan of epic fantasy, you can celebrate your favorite authors and books and discover new works while being entertained by world-class jazz. Authors celebrated will be Tolkien (LOtR), Tomi Adeyemi (Legends of the Orisha), Liani Taylor (Daughter of Smoke & Bone), Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy), George RR Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), and others.

Race and Song: A Musical Conversation

Race and Song: A Musical Conversation

July 31, 2024 1:00 PM @ Off site

On Wednesday, July 31 at 1 PM at Brookline Senior Center, join us for this very special and important event. Race and Song was born in 2020 out of a deep bond and nearly 30-year friendship between veteran musicians and storytelling troubadours Reggie Harris and Alastair Moock. Together in musical conversation, the two explore complex issues of race, class, gender, and history, framing their lived experiences through music for a program that’s as entertaining as it is educational. One of Alastair and Reggie’s greatest strengths as a duo is their ability to meet audiences where they are, adapting their conversation and musical repertoire for a wide range of ages and experiences.

For adults who want to deepen their understanding of antiracism and get more comfortable talking about difficult subjects, Race and Song is an invitation to listen, learn, and engage. Reggie and Alastair have performed together at theaters, arts centers, houses of worship, libraries, senior centers, and universities nationwide, modeling what productive interracial conversations about race can look like while swapping tunes and inviting audience participation in a welcoming and non-judgmental atmosphere.

This program is generously co-sponsored by The Brookline Senior Center, The Brookline Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Relations, Hebrew SeniorLife | Center Communities of Brookline, Goddard House Assisted Living & Memory Support, The Public Library of Brookline, The Brookline Department of Public Health and Human Services, and BrooklineCAN.

MEET THE STAFF

Reference Librarian at Brookline Village Roy MacKenzie

me
First literary crush (author or character): Leslie from Bridge to Terabithia; I think I was in fourth grade when we read it, and I had such a crush on her character, which made it a very difficult book to read.
Last song you listened to: "Wooden Heart" by the Features. (It's criminal that they're not more well known).
Hogwarts House: Ravenclaw for life.
Name a word that starts with the letter Q: Qwerty.
Movie or TV show you always watch when it comes on screen, no matter what: Legend - it's not the *best* movie, but Tim Curry as the devil is just so incredible (and the practical effects are amazing) that I can't bear to turn it off.
If you could travel back in time, what period would you go to? I'd like to visit the roaring 20s just briefly, but I'd hate to get stuck in the past.
Cake or pie? I actually don't like cake or pie very much. The only real exception is cheesecake. I love cheesecake but maintain that it's really more of a pie than cake.
Big dogs or small dogs? Big.
Hardcover or paperback? Hardcover (unless it's an older paperback with amazing cover art from the 30s-70s.)
Fictional world or game you'd most like to visit? Discworld or the Avatar world.
What book would you most like to see turned into a top-notch film or miniseries? Neuromancer.
Favorite fictional librarian? I can't pick just one, it's a tie between Batgirl and the Orangutan in Discworld.
Favorite fictional detective? Philip Marlowe.
Favorite Jane Austen character? Mr. Bennet from Pride and Prejudice.
