Brookline Village Library Temporary Closure for Necessary Repairs

The Public Library of Brookline announced today that the Brookline Village Library will be temporarily closed to the public effective immediately through Monday, April 13. The facility is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday, April 14, following necessary construction and remediation.

The closure was prompted by a leak discovered within the building. While contractors were working to identify the source and repair the leak, they discovered a limited area of mold growth behind a finished wall.

While the exposure was found to be limited, library officials made the proactive decision to close the entire branch to ensure the safety of staff and patrons. This closure allowed for the shutdown of the building’s HVAC system, a preventative measure taken to ensure no mold could be circulated during the repair process.

"The health and safety of our community and staff are our absolute top priorities," said Library Director Jill Mercurio. "While we believe risks to be very low, we chose to be as cautious as possible by shutting down the building and the air systems while the remediation team performs their work."

Remediation and Safety Measures

Professional remediation is currently underway, which includes removal of the affected wall materials, deep cleaning, and replacement of all HVAC air filters. Following these measures, and a successful air quality retest, the Library will return to standard operations on April 14. The Children’s Room and the "Rabbit Hole" program room will remain closed for an additional week.

The Library is using this closure as an opportunity to move up a previously scheduled carpet replacement project for the Youth Services ground floor. By completing the installation now, the Children’s Room will avoid a second closure later this month. Both the Children's Room and the Rabbit Hole are expected to reopen for School Vacation Week.

Accessing Library Services

During the Brookline Village closure, residents are encouraged to visit our other locations at Coolidge Corner or Putterham and/or utilize our digital library services at BrooklineLibrary.org, where e-books, audiobooks, and streaming services are available 24/7.

The Public Library of Brookline appreciates the community’s patience as we conduct this necessary work to make our building safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone.
