Amanda Hirst Named Director of
Public Library of Brookline
|
The Board of Trustees of the Public Library of Brookline has announced the appointment of Amanda Hirst as the new director of the Public Library.
|
|
In this role, Hirst will oversee all operations and staff of the town’s three library facilities, under the direction of the Board of Library Trustees. She will begin in her new role on Monday, August 22, ensuring an efficient transition from Interim Director Dinah O’Brien.
|
Hirst holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati, a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of Washington, and a post-Master’s degree Certificate in Library and Information Science, Leadership & Management Focus from San Jose State University.
|
For the past 16 years, she has held positions of steadily increasing responsibility within the King County Library System in the state of Washington, following earlier stints in Phoenix and Maricopa County, Arizona.
|
“We are delighted to welcome Amanda Hirst to Brookline as the new library director. Amanda’s extensive experience in Washington and Arizona speaks to her qualifications,” Library Trustees Chair Michael A. Burstein said. “The Board of Trustees was also impressed with her dedication to making our libraries as responsive as possible to our patrons. We are looking forward to working with her as she takes on her new role in Brookline.”

Hirst said, “I am thrilled to be the Library Trustees’ choice for the library director position. Throughout my career, I have sought roles that increased the impact I could have, both within the organization and in the community. Brookline’s libraries represent what is best about public libraries today. They are well-cared-for by the staff and well-regarded within the community.
|
|
“My goal will be to work in an environment where I can challenge myself and library staff to improve services to library patrons every day. To me, this means not only providing the traditional services that library patrons have come to expect but also branching out to inform, connect and even delight our patrons,” Hirst added.

Join us at the Library for a very special afternoon visit with The Animal Rescue League of Boston! President & CEO Dr. Edward Schettino will be sharing an overview of the local non-profit organization along with its history and impacts, then Director of Veterinary Medicine Dr. Nicole Breda and Lead Veterinarian Dr. Markeya Williams will be speaking about the organization’s community and shelter medicine programs.

A Q&A session will be offered at the end for a chance to have your questions answered by the team – and you might just get to meet some four-legged friends!

Brookline Village Staff Art Exhibition
|
|
|
The Brookline Village Library is proud to showcase our all-staff exhibit! We reached out to our staff to ask them to submit their contributions and creations to share with the community. From original score compositions to photographs, embroidery, needlepoint, and paintings, there is no shortage of hidden talent amongst our staff. We hope that the exhibit inspires you to try and create something new. The exhibit will be on display through September 16 in the Foundation case, just inside the left entrance.

Global Youth Philanthropy Art Exhibition
|
|
|
Global Youth Philanthropy shares a collection of artwork from their 2022 Art Exhibition. This includes art by students from all over the country, in grades 1-11! This exhibit will be on display through August 29 in the flat case in the Children's Room.

Small Works by Liz Helfer
|
|
Liz Helfer Studios is located in Waltham, MA, where Liz has recently focused on metal because of its historical complexity and perceived value. She has moved into a mixed media practice that addresses our environmental peril. This exhibit features many small pieces, mostly in metal and representing pollinators.
|
|
Liz has traveled widely to create sculptures across the United States and Europe, always landing back in New England. You can find her permanent public sculptures in Latvia, New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. This exhibit is on display through September 30.
|

World Language Storytimes
|
|
The Library is pleased to partner with dedicated community members to offer storytimes in multiple languages – and we have lots of world language storytimes coming up! All of these storytimes are conducted fully in their designated language. Click on the links below for more information about each program.

Send your toy on an adventure to Hall’s Pond for sports, exploring nature, and more! Your toy will enjoy a special trip and return to the library on Wednesday evening with a fun surprise for you! Drop off your stuffed animal at the Brookline Village Library Children’s Room desk before 5 PM on Tuesday, August 23, and pick it up after 6 PM on Wednesday, August 24.

Making Your Own Mirror:
Self Portraits + Gender Expression

Teens and tweens, join us for a virtual workshop, part of the LGBTQIA+ Summer Series!
|
What are the ways you express yourself? Do you ever feel like there are limits to your self-expression? Art can be a very liberating and experimental way to play with and explore gender identity. We will discuss how at times appearance and other’s perceptions of us can conflict with one’s identity or how you see yourself. You will be invited to explore gender identity and expression through self-portraiture. We will create a working definition of self-portraiture and all skill levels are encouraged to join! This program will be facilitated by Paula Mascuch (they/them).
