Afro-Cuban Music and Poetry
|
|
|
|
THURSDAY, October 12 at 7 PM
|
Join us for a dynamic night of Afro-Cuban poetry and music! Northeastern University professor and scholar of Latin American Studies Alan West-Durán will guide us on a journey through the poetry of Nicolás Guillén (1902-1989). Guillén was a leader in the Afrocubanismo arts movement that had ties both to the Harlem Renaissance and the Negritude Movement of the French-speaking Caribbean.

Guillén’s poetry captures the daily life of Afro-Cubans and the history of Cuba. Many of his works have also been set to music. Alan will share five of Guillén’s poems and their musical renditions. Musical genres will include Cuban son, folk, nueva trova, classical, salsa, and rap. If you are interested in learning more about Afro-Cuban arts and culture, this session is for you!

The Visiting Mexican Artists Program: The Dancing Chickens of Ventura Fabian - Norberto Fabian Xuana, son of the late master carver Ventura Fabian, from San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca, Mexico, is proud to carry on the tradition of Oaxacan woodcarving. His work is on display through November 30. All are invited to join Norberto and The Visiting Mexican Artists Program for a demonstration of his work and a Q&A session on Saturday, November 4 at 2 PM.

Join an instructor from the Brookline Arts Center for a drawing program for children ages 5 to 9 years-old and their caregivers. We will explore different corners of the world, drawing interesting animals step-by-step and even learning a little bit about them. Students will learn foundational artistic skills while learning to draw cool creatures such as the fennec fox, capybara, and koalas! This program does not require registration but will have a limited capacity, so please arrive in a timely manner.
