Black History Month Talk with Dr. Rebecca Hall, Author of Award-Winning Graphic Novel WAKE: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts

Rebecca Hall, JD PhD is an independent scholar, activist, and educator. Her paternal grandparents were born enslaved. She writes and publishes on the history of race, gender, law, and resistance as well as articles on climate justice and intersectional feminist theory. Her most recent book, Wake: The Hidden History of Women-Led Slave Revolts (Simon & Schuster, 2021) has won multiple awards, and was a finalist for the N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards and the Pen America Open Book Award. Wake has been listed as a Best Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post, Forbes, and Ms. Magazine. Her work has been supported by numerous grants and fellowships. She is a 2022-23 Radcliffe Institute Fellow.

Chinese Characters Storytime

Join us for an in-person interactive Chinese character storytime, where we will learn simple Chinese characters through stories and drawings. This storytime is geared for kids who are ages 1 to 6 years-old. This program is good for anyone who is interested in learning about Chinese characters. No prior experience is needed.

Douglass Day Transcribe-a-Thon
|
|
|
TUESDAY, February 14 from noon-3 PM
|
The Library will participate in Douglass Day 2023 by hosting a public transcribe-a-thon, where community members can help transcribe the papers of Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893). Shadd Cary was one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, attend law school, and much more. Participants will learn how to use an online platform to transcribe and enhance newly digitized collections from Shadd Cary’s long and fascinating life, contributed by the Archives of Ontario and Libraries and Archives Canada.

Curious about all the buzz regarding induction cooking? Join us for an induction cooking demonstration with members from Mother’s Out Front. They will be making chocolate-coated treats to sample and speaking about the benefits of induction cooking for the environment. Stop by anytime between 3 and 5:30 PM!

Rose Lerner & Olivia Waite Author Talk

THURSDAY, February 16 at 7 PM

Rose Lerner and Olivia Waite are romance authors with a gift for creating characters who are deeply relatable, are beautifully flawed, and earn their happily ever afters. Their research into 19th-century England gives their writing context and detail. Join us for an author talk and Q&A with Rose and Olivia in celebration of Valentine’s Day! We’ll discuss their writing processes, how they research historical details, and how they craft historical happily ever afters. We’ll be highlighting Rose’s new book, Sailor’s Delight, and Olivia’s The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows.
