Join us at the Library for a very special visit from local author Kathleen Courtenay Stone! She will be discussing her book, They Called Us Girls: Stories of Female Ambition from Suffrage to Mad Men, just in time for Women’s History Month. Local independent bookstore Brookline Booksmith will be selling copies at the event starting at 6:30 PM, and Kathleen will be available to sign copies after the event.

Unleash your creativity in this hands-on batik workshop led by local artist Lidia Mikhaylova! Through simple techniques, you will experience how paint lives and reacts on a silk canvas as you transform your feelings into flowers.

A Letter from the Brookline Library Music Association
|

|
Farewell to the Brookline Library Music Association – the BLMA
|
|
It is with sadness and great nostalgia that we announce the dissolution of the BLMA and the end of our free concert series in the Library. The BLMA is an all-volunteer run organization and unaffiliated with the Library. As such, it is a large endeavor for new volunteers to continue, and many members of our board have retired or moved away in recent years.
|
|
The BLMA was born about 71 years ago, on a wintry day in December 1951, when 50 members of the Radcliffe Choral Society trekked to the Public Library of Brookline to become the first performers in what was to become an annual concert series, and to establish the BLMA as one of the first Library music organizations in the country. Since then, the BLMA has produced over 400 free concerts in the library for over 35,000 audience members.
|
In the BLMA’s early days, board members held bake sales and garage sales to pay performers. In recent decades, however, the BLMA operated as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, funded by local business sponsorship and contributions from the community, as well as the occasional benefit concert. The mission was a simple one: to produce an annual series of six free concerts for residents of Brookline and neighboring communities, and thereby to provide performance opportunities for young and emerging professional musicians in the Boston area.
|
One of the BLMA’s early 1960’s concerts featured Joan Baez, a young folk singer just launching her career in the coffee houses of Cambridge. Another BLMA “alum” is internationally acclaimed operatic tenor Stephen Salters. Other illustrious alums include several Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians who performed in the series while students. The BLMA also holds the distinction of having donated and refurbished the Steinway grand piano that has been played by artists and students for many years in
Hunneman Hall performances.

We want to thank all our generous supporters over the seasons, and the talented performers, who made it possible for the BLMA to fulfill its mission. It was a privilege for all of us on the board to have been a part of Brookline history and to have shared so much beautiful music in the exceptional Public Library of Brookline.
