Birds of Prey with Mass Audubon

|
Join the Mass Audubon team at the Brookline Village Library for an encounter with some of their animal ambassadors! During this program, we’ll learn what exactly a bird of prey is through a close-up encounter with three different birds of prey. Together we’ll discover where they live, what they eat, and their unique behaviors. We’ll also explore bird of prey biofacts, which we can touch and learn from.

This program is for adults and kids ages five years old and up, so come join us for this exciting opportunity to meet some special birds!

All are invited to the inaugural Brookline Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Day Celebration on Saturday, May 20, 2023, presented by BAAFN (Brookline Asian American Family Network); Public Schools of Brookline; Brookline Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Relations; and the Public Library of Brookline.

Activities will include AAPI author talks for readers of all ages, book signings, performances, arts and crafts, games and prizes, a food truck, free snacks, and much more. Click here for a full celebration schedule!

Edith Pearlman Prize Awarded to Pascal Srinivasan
|
Pascal Srinivasan, who has just completed his first year in the ACE (Alternative Choices for Education) program at Brookline High School, is this year’s winner of the Edith Pearlman Creative Writing Award. Named for the late, and beloved, Brookline resident who the Boston Globe described as “our greatest living short story writer,” the Pearlman Award celebrates a student who has demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement in the area of creative writing. The award is sponsored by the Trustees of the Brookline Library.

Pascal has won the admiration of his teachers and peers for what BHS faculty member Brendan O’Connell has described as his “collaborative orientation toward the writing process.” Not only has he produced “a compelling short story, a fun personal narrative, and multiple snappy poems that engage readers with rhyme and symbolism” this year but has also been a close and supportive reader of his classmates’ work and has been willing to share his dilemmas and suggestions about writing.

The Edith Pearlman Award was established in 2016 as a tribute to Pearlman, an acclaimed fiction and travel writer and a long-time resident of Brookline. Fellow writers have praised her “capacity to draw beauty from loss” and her sensitivity to “the difference between seeing and understanding.” Her perceptive, delicately crafted work has served as a source of inspiration to young writers. The 2023 Pearlman Award was presented by Library Director Amanda Hirst at BHS’s annual awards ceremony on Tuesday, May 2. Congratulations to Pascal Srinivasan!

Children ages 8 and younger must have an adult with them in the room at all times.

Join us for a fun and interactive puppet storytime with Leigh Baltzer from Through Me to You Puppetry. This program is recommended for ages 0 – 5, but families and kids of all ages are welcome!

This program will be outdoors at Brookline Village on the lawn between the Library and Town Hall. We recommend bringing a blanket or something to sit on. If the weather is not suitable for an outdoor program, it will be moved inside to Hunneman Hall. Any location change will be announced on Library social media and this event listing will be updated. In the event that this program is moved inside, space will be limited, so free tickets will be required.

Tabletop Role Playing Group

Announcing a new group for adults starting May 22: the Tabletop Role Playing Group!
|
This is a tabletop role playing gaming group for patrons 18 and over, where we will try a variety of role playing game systems and settings. D&D is in vogue, but there are many other fun worlds to visit! The group will meet on Discord, the fourth Monday of every month, from 6-8:30 PM. Attendance is limited to 8 people per session so be sure to register on Eventbrite to attend.

Our first game is Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium Inc. Call of Cthulhu is a horror-themed game set in 1920s Boston.
