All are invited to the inaugural Brookline Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Day Celebration on Saturday, May 20, 2023, presented by BAAFN (Brookline Asian American Family Network); Public Schools of Brookline; Brookline Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Relations; and the Public Library of Brookline.

Activities will include AAPI author talks for readers of all ages, book signings, performances, arts and crafts, games and prizes, a food truck, free snacks, and much more. Click here for a full celebration schedule!

If you visit any of the Brookline Libraries this week, you can also fill out a wish ribbon. The ribbons will be transformed into an art installation on the Town Hall Lawn that you can see during the Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Day Celebration. And if you visit the Brookline Village Library, make sure to check out exhibits celebrating AAPI Heritage Month on the main floor and in the Children's Room.

Celebrate the release of Painted Devils with author Margaret Owen, in conversation with our teen librarian, Robin Brenner! Hosted in partnership with the Brookline Booksmith.

Painted Devils: A scrappy former maid and jewel thief must outwit gods, injustice, and her own past in this sequel to the Indie Next Pick Little Thieves by Margaret Owen.

Roleplaying for Parents

Kids are natural role-players, but as a parent or caregiver it might be intimidating to introduce your child to more formal tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGS), especially if you don’t have any role-playing experience yourself. Join Miss Macy, the librarian who runs our Kids RPG club, to learn a little more about various kids' role-playing games available, how to play them with kids, and then practice playing the game Shadows.

This program is intended for adults interested in learning how to playing TTRPGS with kids. Children are welcome to attend with their adults, though information for adults is the primary purpose of this program.

Poetry Writers Meetup

Do you love to write poetry? Do you want to connect with other poets in the area? Join us for a get-together with poets from Brookline and Greater Boston! We’ll meet in an informal setting to share our experiences writing and discuss what we’re reading. Whether you’re just starting to write poetry or have been writing for a while, if you’re looking for a community of poets, you’re welcome to join us.

The Poetry Writers Meetup is hosted by Brookline’s current poet laureate, Jennifer Barber. On May 23, we will be joined by Daniel Carey, who will talk briefly about the experience of starting Thinking Core Press and the journal Paradise in Limbo; his M.F.A. in Creative Writing at Lesley University; his role at the poetry publisher Grid Books; and his own development as a poet.

This program is open to all adults and is especially geared towards emerging poets.

Fun with Swords! with Athena School of Arms

SATURDAY, May 27 at 2 PM
|
Athena School of Arms presents Fun with Swords!: A demonstration of the British military saber, medieval longsword, sword & shield, dagger, and other historical fighting styles. Join us to learn about these different types of swords, and see sparring matches between them. This demonstration is open to adults and kids of all ages; no registration required.
|
Following the demonstration, Athena School of Arms will hold a no-contact, hands-on lesson in one of these sword forms. This workshop is open to adults (18+) on a first come, first served basis – sign up before the demonstration to participate! All equipment provided, no experience necessary.

Tabletop Role Playing Group

Announcing a new group for adults starting May 22: the Tabletop Role Playing Group!
|
This is a tabletop role-playing gaming group for patrons 18 and over, where we will try a variety of role-playing game systems and settings. D&D is in vogue, but there are many other fun worlds to visit! The group will meet on Discord, the fourth Monday of every month, from 6-8:30 PM. Attendance is limited to 8 people per session, so be sure to register on Eventbrite to attend.

Our first game is Call of Cthulhu by Chaosium Inc. Call of Cthulhu is a horror-themed game set in 1920s Boston.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage: A Collection - To celebrate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May, the Brookline Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Relations partnered with residents to collect and display meaningful items to educate, raise awareness, and highlight and uplift Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, stories, and diaspora of cultures. On display through June 1.

A Salute to High School Seniors - As the school year draws to a close, Special Collections’ display has a sample of material from Brookline High School. Stop by the display case near the new fiction to take a look. On display through June 30.

Elizabeth's Collection of Pandas - Check our new collection on display in the Children’s Room! In our wall case, Elizabeth shares her collection of pandas. Elizabeth’s collection includes stuffed animal pandas, a panda-shaped pen, panda sunglasses, and more! Elizabeth is 5 years old and goes to Pre-K. On display through May 22.

Brookline Readers & Leaders Create - This show, organized by the Brookline Readers & Leaders, features artwork by students from the Lawrence, Lincoln, and Florida Ruffin Ridley schools, and the Brookline Early Education Program. Brookline Readers & Leaders is a family-led initiative founded by the Florida Ruffin Ridley School’s Equity PAC in 2020, and now co-hosted by teams from FRR, Lawrence, Lincoln, and BEEP. On display through June 30.

Bjorbaek & Mahoney (Daughters & Mom) Family Art Exhibit - This exhibit features art by Kitt, a sophomore at Brookline High School, Mia, a seventh grader at Baker School, and their mother, Christine Mahoney. Their art was inspired by visiting special places such as St. Augustine, FL, as well as by local scenes in Brookline and Boston. On display through May 31.
