English Language Learners
The Library’s English Language Learning services include ongoing programs where participants can practice English in a friendly environment and connect with other learners. Our ELL coordinators manage a collection of language learning materials and advise language learners about resources. To learn more about our ELL services, read about our programs below or write to our ELL coordinators at brkenglish@minlib.net.
English Club
The English Club is an informal conversation group that is open to adult learners of all levels. This program meets on the ground floor of the Brookline Village Library every Friday 10:30 – 11:30 AM. English Club is drop-in, so you can attend whenever you like. New members are always welcome!
Grammar and More
Practice English in a structured and relaxed way at the Brookline Village Library every first and third Tuesday of the month 10:30 – 11:45 AM. Each session we review a grammar concept and play games to practice. Registration for each session is required and opens one week before each session on the Eventbrite page. This group is for adult language learners of advanced-beginner and intermediate levels. Please note that we cannot accommodate accompanying children or babies.
ELL Film Group
Practice your English language skills as we gather online every second Wednesday of the month 10:30 – 11:30 AM to watch short films together and engage in virtual discussion. This group is open to all English Language Learners but will be geared towards intermediate and advanced speakers. The more, the merrier – grab a snack and join us! Learn more about this group and get a Zoom link.
One-on-One Tutoring
Our language tutoring program matches adult English learners with volunteer tutors for one-on-one sessions to practice English, learn about the local community and share cultural knowledge. The learners and tutors meet weekly for one hour for 6 months in person or online. Volunteers are fluent or native language speakers with tutor training, but are not professional teachers. The program is limited to the residents of Brookline or the Greater Boston Area. A 6 month commitment is required.
ELL Learners: The learner waitlist is closed. Thank you for your interest in the one-one-one tutoring program. Please check back in July for updates.
ELL Tutors: The tutor applications are currently closed and will reopen in June. If you would like to be contacted when the tutor applications reopen or have any questions about becoming an ELL tutor, please reach out to us at brkenglish@minlib.net.
