Author Event with Maxim D. Shrayer

book cover and open suitcase

Join Brookline author Maxim D. Shrayer for a reading from his new memoir, Immigrant Baggage (March 2023). Copies of the book will be on sale, and Dr. Shrayer will be available to sign them.

This will be a hybrid event, so you can attend in person at the Coolidge Corner Library or online via Zoom. No registration required for the in-person program. To register for the Zoom option, click here.

Maxim D. Shrayer is a precious object: a kind of living Rosetta Stone who embodies multiple literary cultures. Shrayer’s wry, witty, wise and nuanced writing weaves together strands of Soviet, Russian, Jewish and American culture in moments of translingual epiphany.  –  Marcel Theroux, author of The Sorcerer of Pyongyang and Far North

Dr. Shrayer was born in Moscow in 1967 to a Jewish-Russian family, spent more than eight years as a refusenik, and immigrated to the United States in 1987. He studied at Moscow University, Brown, Rutgers, and received his Ph.D. at Yale in 1995. He is currently Professor of Russian, English, and Jewish Studies at Boston College, where he co-founded the Jewish Studies Program in 2005. He has authored and edited 20+ books of scholarship, nonfiction, fiction, poetry and translation in English and Russian. He won a 2007 National Jewish Book Award for his two-volume Anthology of Jewish-Russian Literature. In 2012, Shrayer received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his work on poets as witnesses to the Shoah.
