Concert: Songs in Cello & Piano Music
The Library is pleased to present a concert of classical cello and piano music, featuring music written by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, de Falla, and Rachmaninoff. The featured musical works are inspired by vocal genres including German opera and Spanish folksongs, and transcribed from songs without words. In classical music, the term “songs” refers to musical works written to be sung by vocalists. Cello, known as the closest instrument to the human voice, will be sung by Ji Young Lee and piano by Victor Cayres.
This concert will include comments on the music and a Q&A session. Adults and children of all ages are welcome, no registration required. Doors will open at 3 PM.
About the musicians
Cellist Ji Young Lee is known for her evocative interpretation and emotional depth in sound. Her solo performances include Korea’s Seoul Symphony Orchestra, New York’s Hudson Valley Philharmonic, New Jersey’s Bergen Philharmonic, New York Classical Players, The Juilliard Orchestra, and Seoul National University Orchestra. She holds Bachelor’s degree from Curtis Institute of Music, Master’s degree and Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School. Her teachers include Peter Wiley, Timothy Eddy, and Joel Krosnick. Currently Ji Young is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts at the New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser. She plays a cello by Raphael Antonio Gagliano from 1853. She now lives in Back Bay, Boston and likes to walk by the Charles River during sunset. Learn more about Ji Young Lee’s work on her website.
Pianist Victor Cayres has earned praise for concerts with the Sine Nomine string quartet and as soloist with Boston Pops, Orchestre des Jeunes de Fribourg in Switzerland, and Brno Philharmonic in the Czech Republic. He has been a guest artist at Banff Center for the Arts in Canada, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Claflin University, Western Washington University, Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory and State University for Arts and Culture. He has recorded for Albany, Centaur, Navona, and Parma Records, and frequently performs in Brazil, Europe, South Korea, and in the United States, including Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Preston Bradley Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall and Jordan Hall. His concerts have been broadcast live at Brazil’s TV Cultura channel, Boston’s WGBH 99.5 All Classical, and Chicago’s WFMT Fine Arts Radio. Mr. Cayres currently serves as Visiting Lecturer at Boston University, Co-Director for Boston University Tanglewood Institute Young Artists Piano Program, Faculty at New England Conservatory Preparatory School and Rivers School Conservatory. To access, use one of the main entrances, which are equipped with ramps and door openers, followed by the elevator in the atrium.
