Pandemic Feelings: The First Six Months

Anne Robertson, a Brookline resident, focused on visual art for the first time after she retired from a long career as a child and family psychologist. In retirement, she became a volunteer Gallery Instructor at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, giving interactive tours to school groups and took her first art-making classes since seventh grade. She has especially enjoyed making prints, the medium used in the exhibit on view, “Pandemic Feelings: The First Six Months.”

The 10 images in the “Pandemic Feelings” series were made in August, 2020, and are the artist’s visual representations of some of the feelings she and her friends had during those early months of the pandemic. Believing strongly in art’s power to communicate, Robertson hopes that looking at these images will encourage viewers to consider some of the feelings they experienced both early in the pandemic and now. Viewers might ask themselves questions such as, “Do the prints remind you of any emotions you had during the first six months?” and “Have your pandemic feelings changed since then?”

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

The Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Relations, in partnership with the Brookline Village Library, has reached out to a number of community members living in Brookline to gather items that represent AAPI heritage, and is excited to share them with you through the AAPI Heritage Month Exhibit, now on view at the Brookline Village Library until June 30, 2022. We invite you to come and see this exhibit in the first floor display cases (left entrance and lobby), and to read the poignant and powerful essays by the student winners of the BAAFN Asian American Student Essay Contest. We welcome all of you to learn about, better understand, and show your support for the AAPI community.

Art by Kitt & Mia

About the artists

Kitt: I am in 9th grade At Brookline High School, and I love making art!
Some of these projects were for my current freshman year art elective class .
The first piece with two bears is a color pencil drawing which took about two weeks to complete. The focus was on perspective and realism.
The second artwork is a print of my initials KB in different fonts, and was printed twice (in navy blue, and rotated in white ink).
The third work is an abstract portrait painting. I closed my eyes and drew myself with one line.then i printed it three times, and painted it in related color, and complementary colors in the overlaps.
The last piece is a watercolor portrait of Martin Luther King, Jr. I outlined different shadows and went over it with black and white.
Mia: I am a 12 year-old girl who goes to Baker School, and is inspired by important causes and people. For example, I created the picture of Harriet Tubman because I am really motivated by her, and how she persevered no matter what.
Another example is my mosaic which represents the trash in the ocean , and how it hurts animals.I specifically included a turtle because, before Covid-19 started, I went to jekyll Island and saw baby sea turtles hatch and crawl to the ocean. Since then, I have been doing research on how to help turtles, as they are hurt by humans in so many ways.
I love art so much because it gives me a way to show I am, and what I think about certain things, through a different perspective.
